ISLAMABADDubai-based Emirates Airline said Wednesday it would suspend flights to and from the city of Peshawar in northwest Pakistan, one day after a Pakistan International Airlines plane was hit by gunfire while landing at Peshawar's Bacha Khan International Airport.
Emirates, the world's largest airline by international traffic, is the second airline this month to scale back operations in Pakistan due to security concerns. Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. 0293.HK +0.70% suspended all flights to and from Pakistan after a June 8 militant attack on the country's busiest airport in Karachi, an incident in which at least 35 people were killed.
One passenger was killed and two flight attendants were wounded when unidentified attackers shot at the PIA aircraft, an Airbus A310 carrying 196 passengers and 10 crew members, police and PIA officials said.
Officials at Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority said on Wednesday that security at all airports in Pakistan has been reinforced to prevent any militant attacks.
Emirates, one of the largest airlines in the world, operated two flights a week to Peshawar. Its operations at four other destinations in PakistanKarachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Sialkotwould continue as scheduled, Pakistani civil aviation officials said.
Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, another major international carrier with flights to Peshawar, said in a statement posted online on Wednesday that it was reviewing the security situation in the city, which is the capital of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province
