Something got misrepresented in the paper, as the tycoon had actually promised to make a donation to a homeless shelter rather than handing out cash.

A good many FReepers predicted this wouldn’t turn out well.

The Chinaman should have screened “Boudu Saved from Drowning” before he tried this little piece of “charity.”

Michelle Tolson, director of public relations at the Mission, said Tuesday that no cash would be handed out to individuals and that it had taken 1.5 months of negotiations to convince Chen to instead donate $90,000 to the group.

so the $300/ea was paid by Chen, but was given to the mission instead of directly to the guests of the mission?

I just saw a video from the event, and many people were waving the three Franklins they had just been given...

In all fairness, by the time you get to the homeless stage, it pretty well impossible to get hired.

You hair is messed, probably haven’t washed or showered so you smell, clothes are crumpled, etc.

This is a propaganda stunt performed for the benefit of the Chinese regime.

Bums in NYC are not "down on their luck" - they are mentally ill addicts in 99 out of 100 cases.

The Chinese government would not tolerate a wealthy American going to one of the shanty towns in their big cities and handing out free baby formula with no added melamine to desperate mothers there.

There are hundreds of places in NYC you can go to get a shower, a haircut, a shave, a hot meal, a bed, a new set of clothes and the use of a PC for job search purposes - all for free.

The only problem: you can't bring alcohol or drugs on the premises.

You can please some of the people all of the tiume, and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please Democrats.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Correct. This will be played throughout China to show the poor living conditions in America and the charity of the Chinese.

I work with a guy from PRC. He knows what it is really like here so I don’t think this little stunt will work.

That’s right; there is shelter space for the homeless, who spurn it because of those regulations. When Republicans are in power, they are “homeless”; with Dems in power, they are drug addicts who refuse to enter shelters.

One other distinguishing feature about the homeless -

Anger. Lots of anger. Unresolved, burning anger.

At society, at people, at themselves. That’s why they’re homeless, they don’t want to be around other people.

And business = people. If you can’t get along with people at all, you ain’t working.

That's certainly part of it.

Another part of it is this: if I lost my job, my house, and my marriage simultaneously (a very rare event, but I know one person whom it did happen to - and he basically deserved it), there are probably about ten different people I know who would put me up for a month, and three who would put me up for a year.

I know one person who would pay me to stay nine months out of the year at his summer place just to keep it up.

Why? Because I do not take advantage of my friends, or screw over my relatives, and I do favors for people when I have the opportunity - in other words I'm a normal person.

Bums are people who have destroyed the trust and forgiveness of every person in their lives. They have burned every bridge. They have stolen from their family and friends, often physically attacked family members, have left family members holding the bag when they've skipped bail, ripped off girlfriends and boyfriends, etc.

You have to work very hard to become an adult bum in America.

Every panhandler you see has, I guarantee, treated multiple people whom they should have loved and respected with abuse and cruelty.

Stories like this demonstrate why my sympathy meter is at zero for the poor and homeless in this country. I have been cursed at by homeless beggars when I offered food when they wanted cash. I drive to work past a food pantry and see a huge line of able bodied people with trunks full of food.

Yes and no... they’ll show the lunch and any anger, but not any monetary hand out. They still have too much of their own poverty and it requires some tamping down when it starts to boil up. Seeing this would likely put some folks on high simmer...along the lines of why are you helping them when we can’t even get abc, xyz, etc.
