Global warming's bad, but farming can adapt, Cargill exec says
Pioneer Press ^ | 6-24-14 | Tom Webb

Climate change may shrink the ice caps and devastate the coasts, but here in the farmlands of Minnesota and the Dakotas, a milder climate may bring some benefits, a new report suggests.

That was one twist in a report issued Tuesday by a group of top corporate and political officials, including Greg Page, executive chairman of Wayzata-based agribusiness giant Cargill.

While the group's other notables warned Tuesday about possible devastation ahead, Page delivered a conflicted -- even hopeful -- view of how food production would adjust to a changing climate.

For instance, a warming climate is expected to shift the Corn Belt northward -- a disaster for farmers in central states, even as farmers in the northern tier take advantage of a longer growing season and more cropping options.

As long as the Midwest has water, we’ll keep producing food. Once the coasts and the south start draining our Great Lakes, it’s over.

Keep an eye on that, because it’s coming.

Global cooling is bad too, but we can also adapt there.

We’ve had Global Warming and Global Cooling forever in earth’s history, so it’s no big deal in the bigger picture.

Oh ... I should say I’m an absolutely firm believer in Global Warming and Global Cooling .... it’s just the “Anthropogenic Global Warming” that I think is a bunch of hooey ... :-) ...

Since the beginning of this AGW hysteria, I’ve been saying that if people just have to fret about something, they should be more worried about global cooling than warming.

Some slight warming could actually increase arable land around the world and increase food supplies for people who desperately need it. Global cooling could be disastrous, OTOH.

Cargill is all for ethanol in your gas tank as they control much of the corn production so you can expect them parroting the global warming garbage so they can get more subsidies.

I would think that more CO2 in the atmosphere, and generally warmer temps would *help* crops....not hurt them.

But then, what do I know. I'm not smart, like AlGore.

And BTW, Big Al has a long article in Rolling Stone this month. I skimmed it...Talks about how "Maybe we've managed to dodge this whole Global Warming thing after all, since people listened to me."

Sez me, that sounded like a surrender. Maybe we've heard the end of it.

Cargill........ as they control much of the corn production

As someone who farmed for many years, and still has family in the farming a ranching business, can you help out my family?

I heard that we're being victimized by Monsanto, not Cargill.

Who to believe, who to believe?

This article shows how few companies control food production.

We’re already selling water from the great lakes to China.

I would think that more CO2 in the atmosphere, and generally warmer temps would *help* crops....not hurt them.

That is absolutely the case and it is completely supported by images which from space which show beyond any doubt that the earth has been getting progressively greener during the time period that satellite imagery originally become available. However the satellites also show that there has been no measurable increase in the overall temperature of the earth in nearly twenty years.

Despite being absolutely essential to all life on earth... CO2 still makes up only 400 millionths or .00004% of the earth's atmosphere which classifies it as a trace gas. Unfortunately, the fact that western civilization can be so easily manipulated by charlatans advocating disproven crackpot theories is just another indicator that our civilization is most certainly in decline. My guess is that 40 years from now our Chinese masters will be laughing at our foolishness not unlike the following commercial about unbridled spending that you have probably seen before.

If Global warming was real, Al Gore would be buying up potential farmland in Canada.

UM...not buying it. There’s a friggin’ link to a Jesse Ventura video, LOL!

We Great Lakes States (and Canada) have a compact in place against just such a thing, and I’m CERTAIN if the USA WAS draining the Great Lakes, our Governor would be spittin’ kittens over it!

http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/greatlakes/compact.html

However, if China wants to buy water from the shoreline of Lake Michigan near Milwaukee, WI where the Democrat Mayor Tom Barret allows sewage to be dumped, I’m all for that, LOL!
