The two-year attempt to push immigration reform through Congress is effectively dead and unlikely to be revived until after President Obama leaves office, numerous lawmakers and advocates on both sides of the issue said this week.
The slow collapse of hopes for new border legislation which has unraveled in recent months amid persistent opposition from House Republicans marks the end of an effort that both Democrats and Republicans have characterized as central to the future of their parties. The failure leaves some 12 million illegal immigrants in continuing limbo over their status and is certain to increase political pressure on Obama from the left to act on his own.
Some of the most vocal proponents of a legislative overhaul now say they have surrendered any last hopes that Democrats and Republicans can reach a deal. The realization marks a low point for advocates who mounted the first serious immigration push since 2007, when a bipartisan effort under then-president George W. Bush was defeated in the Senate.
Obama called immigration reform his top second-term priority, and many GOP leaders suggested after their 2012 election loss to Obama that a deal was necessary for the party as it sought to broaden its appeal to Latinos.
But after a year of cajoling, prodding and berating House Republicans, leading advocates acknowledge that time has run out. Friday marks a year since the Senate approved a comprehensive immigration bill on a bipartisan vote, with no progress evident in the GOP-controlled House and little time left this year to approve legislation.

There’s only one thing left to do. Start the deportations again!
Amnesty will happen in the lame duck of 2014...
It is their last & best chance...
Nahhh, bull puckey. King Obama will write a few more Exec Orders to further muddy up the situation. Valerie Jarrett isn’t going to let this die.
Ubama conspired with Latin American leaders to overwhelm our southern border. He is bringing in thousands of illegals a day and dispersing them throughout the country.
These people are never going to leave. Anybody who suggests that they should will be demonized. SSDD.
Darn right! Why pass laws to be ignored by a lawless president?
He checks another *success* off of his list.
Well ... that certainly good news, but we better keep “watching” those legislators anyway ... :-) ...
There is no limbo...... they are illegal
I’ll bet Al Raza isn’t very happy to hear this. They were wanting a quick takeover BEFORE Barry left. Look for scorched earth this summer.
This is an effort to lull us to sleep.
The danger is the lame duck session. Boehner could easily forego the Hastert rule, line up 16 rinos and vote with democrats to send a comprehensive bill to the senate.
There is nothing I know of that can stop that other than some kind of procedural delay temporarily.
Immigration should be stopped until out of work Americans (not the fake administration numbers) have jobs.
Don’t believe the conventional wisdom. The GOPe is still working furiously behind the scenes to get something passed this year. They want more guest workers to satisfy the demands of their corporate paymasters.
And we continue to import 1.1 million LEGAL PERMANENT IMMIGRANTS ANNUALLY for the past 25 years. The status quo is a losing proposition for the GOP. Amnesty just hastens the process.
Substitute “IF” not when Obomhole leaves office to make this a correct statement.
Both sides lie.
I don’t believe it for one minute.
Yep. I believe that is what will happen.
Obama and company have already got what they want —a collapsing southern border with hordes of illegal aliens coming in. Amnesty or so called “immigration reform” are moot points —these illegals are coming here in droves and they will NEVER be forced to leave.
Two years??!! More like 13 years since Prince George took the throne in 2001.
“The failure leaves some 12 million illegal immigrants in continuing limbo over their status..”
Um, no, WaPo, their status is actually quite easy to figure out. They broke the law to come here. Therefore, their status is “ILLEGAL” and must return to wherever they came from. But here’s a novel concept... They can always get in line and go through the lawful process we have currently in place to immigrate here legally!
Oh, I am so relieved then. /sarcasm
Really? The Obamugabe immigration “reform” is in full throttle as the Soros Administration floods our country with Obama’s Alien Army of Cultural Destruction. We are finished as a nation.
A bill? Valerie Jarrett don’t need no steenkin’ bill. Just go around congress and bring on the hordes of illegals. Two years from now, real Americans will be the minority.
Balderdash. Their best and brightest hope is during the lame duck. Plan on it.
Why didn’t the Democrats push Amnesty when they controlled the WH and both Houses of Congress?
Hah! I wish it was “only” 12 million! I say start mass deportations, city by city.
0bama will enact Amnesty with his pen and his phone, probably in August or September.
I hope the Hispanic voters that voted Democrat hoping to get some solution on immigration will remember how badly the Democrats screwed this up. But they won’t.
Their best chance is a GOP congress and President.
If it is true that we will slip this attempted death blow, we probably have Dave Brat, and the voters of the 7th in Virginia to thank, for replacing Eric Cantor.
Like any real conservative, he is going to need grassroots support, because the RNC will probably be missing in action for him in the general. Weneed him and those like him.
Gowdy, Goodlatte, Labrador, Ted Poe and others were ready to grant amnesty to the dreamers.
King got under Messiah Gowdy’s skin.
In response to Kings comments, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., said reprehensible and Did you hear his five minutes? Gowdy asked a scrum of reporters about Kings statement. He took one line from my opening statement about a remedy that lasts a lifetime and lectures me about the rule of law. I was a prosecutor for 15 years.
When children eat a grape at the grocery store or eat a piece of candy waiting in line before mom or dad pays for it we dont have them arrested for petty larceny, he added.
The most important thing that happened was the shutdown which pushed amnesty into the next year when the truth of the dreamer surge became known. We have Steve King, Lou Barletta, Kerry Bentivolio, Dana Rohrabacher, Steve Stockman, Gohmert, Bachmann and Mo Brooks.
Ingraham protecting Walter Jones was the best thing she did in the primaries. If Walter Jones lost the entire NC delegation was open to immigration reform.
I haven’t got the full list but Steve King said he had 20 to 70 in his coalition.
The other side had 20 who were committed. Then there is 150 who are undecided and don’t feel strongly about immigration.
But...but...it’s an act of love, Jeb said so....
These people are never going to leave. I said the same thing when Perry opened up Texas to the Katrina folks. And most of them didn’t leave.
