Once you have decided to fight you should either die fighting or win.

Dying while surrendering is the only other option.

Anybody got a scorecard?

If I have it figured out, the militants are the ethnic Russians who don't want to fight anymore and the terrorists are the ethnic Russians who do. Right?

Due to Stalin’s murderous purge of his general officers and his own incompetence as a strategic commander, millions of Soviet troops were forced to surrender to the Germans after whole Soviet armies were surrounded and compelled to surrender. Once a Soviet citizen surrendered to the German forces, Stalin’s orders commanded the execution of any such person. Stalin later bullied the Allied forces to repatriate Soviet prisoners of war liberated from German captivity. British forces forced many of these Soviet POWs to board ships which transported them to the Soviet port at Sevastopol, the Crimea, Soviet Union in return for Allied POWs liberated by the Soviet forces. As the Soviet POWs debarked from the ship, the Soviets escorted them behind a wall on the dock and shot them to death on the spot. Then the Allied POWs were permitted to embark on the ship for the trip home.

The Allies allegedly suspended these repatriations of the Soviet POWs as a consequence of these executions, and it is alleged Stalin retaliated by refusing to repatriate tens of thousands of Allied POWs. Stalin was particularly incensed by the Allied reluctance to repatriate Ukrainians.

That is how the Japanese defeated us in WWII.

I would imagine it would depend upon the nature of the conflict. If you are fighting irregulars without the infrastructure behind them to deal with POWs, I suspect that attempting to surrender is a fool's errand. Might as well die fighting, as it's unlikely the other side will be able to deal with prisoners.

In today's society the concept of parole isn't likely to be honored by anyone.

Let's say you're an American soldier who finds himself in a position that he has to surrender to such irregulars. How would it be dealt with at the command level if you had been granted parole providing you didn't take up arms against them in the future. Would, or could such a vow be recognised by the command structure?
