As BBC reports, citing Maliki, "Jets from Russia and Belarus will hopefully make a key difference in the fight against ISIS in Iraq." He expressed regrets over Iraq's contract with the US, saying their "jets are taking too long to arrive."
"God willing within one week this force will be effective and will destroy the terrorists' dens," he told BBC Arabic.

Within one week? Who is going to fly them? Russian pilots?
I have a feeling the vast majority of Sadaam’s air force officers were Sunnis.
Good point! Probably Russian Pilots at first. Kind of like Syria.
Maliki’s scumbag persona is so transparent at this point, I have to wonder why Bush picked him to be head honcho. Yet another of GWB’s head-shakingly bad personnel decisions.
Isn’t Iraq’s air force infrastructure geared to US planes?
Obama is consistently on the wrong side of terrorism and is asking for $500 million to fund the Al Queda backed Syrian rebels. Congress should not only refuse the request, they should pass a law prohibiting him from spending any money to support the Syrian rebels.
Syria's pilots are Alawite. Hafez Assad was an air force pilot.
If we see Russian Aircraft flying in a couple weeks, then we will KNOW the Russian Air-Force will be over the skies of Iraq. Just like Syria....
It seems like we are making a lot of countries mad us compared to the past.
I would be skeptical about any of this.
Iraq has enough helicopter force to provide air cover and ground support. - If it can find pilots to fly the things in harms way.
Air superiority fighters aren’t going to do squat, even if they can be tasked to destroy infrastructure - which would be kind of stupid...
Wasn’t “America”, Mr. Maliki.
It was purely Obama. And he sure as hell isn’t America.
Go Russia! Go Iraq! Go Syria! Send Obama and John McCain’s Christian killer jihadi army to Hell!
John Kerry strikes again. Where’ his reset button?
send in the Egyptians- they`ll make mincemeat of ISIS.
Su-25s with Russian “volunteers” a la Chennault’s AVG.
Iraq’s military has a long history of wielding Russian weapons, MiGs, AK rifles, and the Iraqi tanks are all Russian Soviet inventions. In fact, if Saddam hadn’t been a secular opposition to Iran, we would have stayed hostile to him due to his Soviet alliance.
Bush didn’t pick him, he was voted on by the people from among a number that were running. Remember the purple index fingers?
The world loves us!
The planes are going to end up in the rebel’s hands and who knows where after that.
Better some Migs than F-16s.
Maybe, but you need trained pilots to fly those planes. Even if you found the old MiG pilots, they would still need flight training and time to get up to speed. Not that it can’t be done, but a week (or even a month) is not realistic.
Bush picked him out of a bunch of Shiite contenders. He could vetoed Maliki, due to US aid being crucial to any Iraqi government's survival, and the Dawa party would have have booted him. Allawi would have been a better choice.
Obama strikes up the theme, "It is Bush's fault." And his surrogates will parrot it throughout eternity.
See my #18
Much faster to get up to speed on, more forgiving, less maintenance/support, and less required infrastructure.
We delude ourselves, why should you be different???
what money will they use?
EVERYTHING obama does either:
a) Weakens America/AmericansI have yet to have anyone raise a single substantive counter example in several years of posting this.
b) Distances America's allies
c) Strengthens America's enemies
d) Serves Islam
e) Harms Israel
Or some combination of the above.
Yes. If we did that here, we'd have a whole set of new office holders.
What it really means is that Obama has asked, and is about to get $500 milllion more to arm ISIS and its al-Qaeda peers in Syria, which in turn the Iraq air force will now use Russian jets to bomb.
This is a confused and bizarre foreign policy. It is the kind of policy that only smarmy twits like Marie Harf understand, because no one else can!
I fell down and scraped my knee
Rode my bike into a tree
Stick in my eye now I can’t seeeeeeee!
But don’t blame me it’s Bush’s fault
The Suadi’s/Qatari’s interest is putting an overland gas pipeline through ISIS territory and Turkey to Europe. With healthy royalties for Turkey.
The Russians (via their Shia proxies in Iran/Syria and now Iraq) interest is stopping this pipeline at all cost as it undermines their near monopoly on proving gas to Europe and the influence associated with such.
Saudi, Qatar, USA, Syrian Rebels, ISIS and Turkey...VS...Syria, Iran, Lebanon (Hezzbulah), and Russia.
Trying to remain, or at least appear neutral: Kurds, Jordan and Kuwait.
The Kurds aren’t that neutral. They also need to move their oil through Turkey. They are currently opposed by Baghdad -which continues to claim Kurdish territory and resources as its own, and ISIS with whom they’re still working out the Kurdistan-Sunnistan border.
And once the war is won, they make good crop dusters!
It was not America, you put your trust and believed what mac daddy, the worlds greatest liar, told you so your problem is with him not America.
I had no idea you can uparmor a Piper Pawnee cropduster.
A sitting duck against any force which has at least automatic firearms, let alone 50 cal or AA-guns.
But c'mon...what platform was it derived from?
Congress is out in front of Obama on this.
Spring 2013 the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 15-3 to arm the rebels. Subsequently the Intelligence Committee approved the plan Obama worked up.
The CIA picks single rebel groups takes them to Turkey where the vetting takes place, then trains them in Qatar, then gives them the weapons. But only anti-tank weapons, no anti-aircraft weapons.
So the Syrian rebels and some members of congress are complaining that they need anti-aircraft weapons and the pace of the vetting and training need to pick up. The man complaining the loudest is McCain.
Obama wants congress to stick their neck out.
If you have the time to spare, PBS Frontline website has 20 min video entitled "Arming the Syrian Rebels" that aired 3 weeks ago.
If we are talking of military aircraft it’s layout is similar to 1939 Il-2 Shturmovik aka cement bomber or black death by the Germans.
Totally outdated by the Korean War.
Right now this layout is typical to many agricultural planes and this one must be a variant.
It doesn’t belong to a modern battlefield.
