(Reuters) - A prominent leader of the Mississippi Tea Party who was arrested in connection with photos posted online of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran's bedridden wife died on Friday of an apparent suicide, the man’s lawyer said.

Mark Mayfield, 58, was vice chairman of the Mississippi Tea Party and a Central Mississippi Tea Party chairperson, according to those organizations' websites.

"This is a terrible tragedy that shouldn’t have happened," Mayfield's lawyer John Reeves told Reuters.

Mayfield was one of three men accused last month of conspiring with a blogger who was charged with taking photos of Cochran's bedridden wife in her nursing home for use in a political video against the incumbent.

You have a point. This doesn’t sound like tea party ethics at all.

Mayfield was a member of the Central Mississippi Tea Party and Mississippi Tea Party. Bruce’s group, however, separated from the tea party organizations years ago over disagreements about how the tea party operated. However, they share political ideologies, and she remained in close contact with Mayfield.

The tragedy that shouldn’t have happened was this guy and accomplices pulling such a low trick. Who did he think he was helping? He must have been a dem mole. If not, then this is another reason to keep your guard against so-called tea party groups. I am no supporter of Cochran, but this was below the belt. This was not worthy of any conservative leader or group. To pull this stunt, then take his own life instead of facing the music is another indication that he was not mature enough to be in a leadership position.

Sounds like Cochran and the GOP-E are getting rid of loose ends. People who know too much. Must be feeling the heat.

Yes, I don’t know about those three as I hadn’t really followed that story. But generally what you’re saying about TEA imposters is no doubt true.

Still this is a message to real TEA Party members and leaders and those thinking about getting involved.

Choosing this guy as the target might’ve just been a decision because it would be a bit harder to make him into a victim than say one of the lovely TEA Party leaders we see on the news.

These headlines are so misleading and yet show a trend to label Republicans as Tea Party leaders when it suits their story. Mayfield was well known and respected within the Mississippi Republican Party. He was friends and allies with all of the powers that be in the state. It is a tangled web.

Ugh, there are several ridiculous comments alleging this was a murder by the “GOP-E”. Give me a break.

It sounds like he put a hose on his tailpipe, RIP.
