On Air Force One, No Lightening Up on Burgers and Cake
The New York Times ^ | June 27, 2014 | Emmarie Huetteman

A blue-cheese burger with lettuce, tomato and garlic aioli, accompanied by Parmesan-sprinkled fries. Chocolate fudge cake. Pasta shells stuffed with four cheeses, topped with meat sauce and shredded mozzarella, and served with a garlic breadstick. Cake infused with limoncello. Buffalo wings with celery, carrots and homemade ranch dip.

Such was the fare served to passengers aboard Air Force One during a particularly grueling three-state day on the campaign trail just before the 2012 election. Not much has changed since.

“It’s American fare, in that it’s not going all arugula on people,” said Arun Chaudhary, who was President Obama’s videographer from 2009 to 2011. “It’s not aggressively nutritious.”

To say the least. The food on Air Force One is well known among White House staff members and reporters for being plentiful in quantity and broad in appeal, but not always the perfect mirror of the nutritional recommendations coming out of the office of the first lady, Michelle Obama, who has made healthy eating and living her mission.

According to the Agriculture Department’s MyPlate guide, unveiled by Mrs. Obama in 2011, fruits and vegetables should make up half of a meal. (White potatoes alone will not do the trick, as the first lady wrote in a recent editorial.) Mrs. Obama has also emphasized the need to reduce the consumption of sugar, salt and fat in her fight to improve school lunches as part of her Let’s Move initiative against childhood obesity...

When Barack and the crew gladly chow down upon a Chef Michelle menu, then I will believe she has the skillz.

One day, the chef will get pissed and serve them chicken and watermelon.

The food on AF 1 does sound good (if not kosher). I don’t begrudge the duly elected president and his family and guests to eat well. But can’t we make the sycophant reporters and their papers pay for THEIR SHARE??

Also, digestion would not function if every meal were half non starchy veggies and fruits. Half by what? Maybe volume. But we need proteins and starches and fats. A balanced diet should have at least a third of calories from good clean fats. I bet that Air Force one meal is pretty balanced and yummy.

It IS possible to produce lightened versions of many culinary classics that retain most of the enjoyability. But it takes dedication, imagination, and persistence to do it well.

I wouldn’t set foot on that plane with the current administration in charge if they served all-you-can-eat Wagyu beef and lobster.

I have a feeling the shoes on those young ladies cost more than my car.

In the U.S., it’s not unusual for a high-end pair of shoes to cost $2,000. (More than that is notable ... those are more “collectables” than everyday wear.) I’m not sure how that converts to European prices.

Mrs. Sarkozy and Crown Princess (now Queen) Letizia would think nothing of paying $2,000/equivalent for a pair of pumps. How the other half lives.

(Also, they’re in their 40s.)

I’m in my 50’s, so “young” still applies. And boy, they don’t look like it, especially next to Aunt Esther.

Michelle doesn’t look old, particularly, in my opinion. She just looks slovenly.

That’s her big shoulders and awful posture and carriage.

Look at her calves in the picture (which is Photoshopped, btw. She did wear that outfit to meet the royal family of Spain, but Mrs. Sarkozy wasn’t there and Princess Letizia was in a different dress.) They’re not any bigger than the other ladies’. Most of her problems are fixable with a change of clothing and movement.

No, she’s never going to have a bone-thin white woman’s butt, but neither are the vast majority of black or white women.

And that’s the truth. As far as I can tell, she’s a person with a lot of rage and hatred, and way too much power.
