In 1987, the Ukraine was still a part of the USSR. Ukraine was left with a huge army and equipment when they became independent...all Russian made.

Strelkov’s update says he doesn’t know who the tank claimed belongs to. It may be the T-64BV his units destroyed a couple of days ago.

That said, the Horlivka group (Besler) also captured a couple of T-64’s last month, so it could be one of those. The three T-64’s from Crimea are all reported to be around Donetsk, but that could also be Besler.

That’s why I put the word “article” in quotation marks, the translation suggests that the tank was not in the Ukrainian armed forces.

Maybe it’s one of the tanks that RT reported swam up the river to get there?

As a former tanker, I would like to know how they captured this vehicle, assuming it was fueled, running, ammo’d up, with a mission capable commander & crew.

“Khorosho, bratsii! Da, da, you in the T-64, pull over, seichas!!”

The crews change sides is the way they've gotten most of their heavy equipment.

This may help clarify:
Russia Just Significantly Escalated The Crisis In Ukraine

The U.S. State Department accused Russia on Friday of sending tanks and other heavy military equipment to separatists in Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in a conflict that had seemed to be simmering.

“Russia will claim these tanks were taken from Ukrainian forces, but no Ukrainian tank units have been operating in that area,” deputy spokesperson Marie Harf said in a statement Friday. “We are confident that these tanks came from Russia.”

The escalation was “unacceptable,” Harf said, warning of further potential “costs” on Russia.

She said Russia had sent convoy of three T-64 tanks, several BM-21 or Grad multiple rocket launchers, and other military vehicles into Ukraine over the past three days. The T-64 tank is no longer used by Russian forces, but they have been kept at a deployment site in southwest Russia and were recently deployed.

“We assess that separatists in eastern Ukraine have acquired heavy weapons and military equipment from Russia, including Russian tanks and multiple rocket launchers,” Harf said.

Until the past few days, the crisis in Ukraine had seemed to be calming down. One week ago, U.S. President Barack Obama had a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin that left U.S. officials “optimistic” about de-escalation.

A video that made its way online Thursday showed a tank advancing toward Donetsk, the city in Ukraine where pro-Russian separatists have stirred angst and taken over government buildings.

Putin spoke Thursday with newly inaugurated Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who called to object to the reported advancement of tanks toward the hands of pro-Russian separatists. A spokesman for Poroshenko wrote on his Facebook page that Poroshenko told Putin the escalation was “unacceptable.”

The new developments led U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to call on Obama to impose new sanctions on Russia.

“In my view, unless Putin is confronted by stronger disincentives, he will not cease support for the insurgents who are occupying more and more Ukrainian territory along the Russian border,” Menendez wrote in a letter to Obama. “He will continue to seek to ensure that the Ukrainian government can’t stabilize the situation or address the pressing needs of the Ukrainian public.”

Yeah, well, it's not just to let the treadheads save face, it keeps Kiev in the dark.

Kiev probably lists them as MIA because since Kiev refuses to admit it's a civil war civil war with two organized forces opposing one another, they're never going to go along with exchanging information about prisoners and so on unless that requirement is imposed on them by outsiders. At any rate, being MIA is a good thing from the point of view of those who do change sides.

If the Kiev Coup Kiddies know for sure someone deserted more than likely their families in other parts of Ukraine would be questioned about where their sympathies lie and probably still be suspect no matter how the questioning turned out.

OK, I’ll ignore the term “treadhead”. Mainly because the first thing I learned in the tanks is, never maneuver without the infantry right there with you (Dad was infantry in WWII, I respect the infantry above all others). Tanks cannot survive without infantry with their many additional eyes & antitank weapons.

If the infantry is riding on your tank, filling in the blanks between tanks either on foot or in APCs, you’ve got a chance. The two need each other.

I don’t know whether there have been any classic combined arms shootouts between Ukrainian & Russian forces yet. Are you aware of any?
