Tragedy as girl, 3, killed in Philadelphia ice cream shop after security gate collapses

A metal security gate detached from the facade of an Italian ice shop in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon, killing a three-year-old girl, police said. The security door fell on the child at a Rita's Water Ice store in north Philadelphia at around 4:30 pm, according to the Philadelphia Police Department. The girl was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and died after arrival. 'Our hearts and prayers go out to the child's family,' said Linda Duke, a spokeswoman for Rita's Italian Ice, the shop's parent company.

Tragic. I think it's even more tragic that business owners in our inner cities need to have these security gates installed on their storefronts in the first place. All this because of liberal policies that have enabled entire generations of inner city kids to have no work ethic and no respect for other people's property. We have turned out cities into war zones.

In some neighborhoods businesses have to be secured like drug houses so you only pass product and currency and the owners are protected from the customers.

I remember the first time I went to Italy and Greece in the late 60s and saw those gates all over, and thought, "Oh, WE don't have to live with criminals in the U.S. like THEY do..."

In my town these are banned, though they grandfathered the handful of businesses that already had them.

They are ugly indicators of a declining area, but if I had a business I’d want them.

I would think that this would require bolts that go all the way thru the wall. I wouldn’t trust any of the anchors. I don’t know I’m not in a position to second guess the installer, but I’m sure he is in his own personal hell right now.
