Emperor penguin population to slide due Antarctic climate change

OSLO, (Reuters) - Global warming will cut Antarctica's 600,000-strong emperor penguin population by at least a fifth by 2100 as the sea ice on which the birds breed becomes less secure, a study said on Sunday.

The report urged governments to list the birds as endangered, even though populations in 45 known colonies were likely to rise slightly by 2050 before declining. Such a listing could impose restrictions on tourism and fishing companies.

The study is the first to project the long-term outlook for Antarctica's largest penguins, which can grow 1.2 meters (four ft) tall, seeking to fill a gap in understanding climate change and wildlife in one of the remotest parts of the planet.

Overall, numbers were set to fall by at least 19 percent from current levels by 2100 as sea ice melts. And two-thirds of colonies of the birds, which have distinctive golden head patches, would decline by more than half, it said.

"It's not happy news for the emperor penguin," said Hal Castellan of the U.S. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a co-author of the study in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The BS keeps coming...the progressives NEVER tire of spouting off about this fictitious man made climate change.

I guess the gullible keep buying it.

Nonsense. False premise, false conclusion. So what do you want? Money and control by the “knowledgeable elites.” Should have never asked.

They expect the population to rise before declining. Why, it’s almost as if animal populations increase under good conditions, and then, when they exceed the capacity of the habitat, the population declines.

And otherwise, wouldn’t falling penguin populations be good for the climate? They poop a ton. Millions of tons.

If anything they’re dying because of the increased distance between their nesting grounds and the sea because of increased ice.

I don’t think there’s another “higher order” animal that lives on a more extreme edge of survival than the emperor penguin. They go miles inland to breed and lay eggs then the females head back to the sea for the next 6 months of the winter. Meanwhile the males sit on the eggs, hatch the eggs and feed the young with a secretion from fat stored in their own bodies. By the time the females return the males are almost done and a day or two longer may be too long to save them.

Polar bears in the arctic, emperor penguins in the Antarctic ... it never stops.

Bad news for these folks is the growing and record extent of Antarctic sea ice. See Joe Bastardi's most recent summary beginning about minute 7:00:

Saturday Summary June 28, 2014

(BTW, having seen "March of the Penguins" and how they survive (barely) months of wind and frigid temperatures, not sure how warming is going to be detrimental to the emperors.)
