Gallup poll: Confidence in Supreme Court falls to 30%
Los Angeles Times ^ | 06/30/2014 | MICHAEL MUSKAL

There was time when a majority of Americans were confident in their Supreme Court, but those positive feelings have been eroding in the last quarter of a century so that just 30% now say they have confidence in the institution, according to a Gallup poll.

The poll, released Monday, had good news and bad news for the high court, a unique institution that serves as a check and balance in the United States. People have more confidence in the court than in any other arm of government, but that may not be saying that much when confidence in the presidency stands at 29% and in the Congress at 7%.

Judges on the Supreme Court are appointed for life and, unlike members of Congress or the president, do not have go through the rigors of elections. But as national attitudes change on controversial issues including abortion, racial segregation and same-sex marriage, so too does the legal system’s response. The Supreme Court may not  follow polls, but changing attitudes can have an impact.

Libs are not happy with them saying you can’t force corporations to be baby killers

We are not happy with them for saying perverts can get married.

Explains the low rating.

RE: We are not happy with them for saying perverts can get married.

SCOTUS has not ruled on that issue at all. Not yet.

I’m sure the LATimes thinks that imposing gay marriage on the whole country and making everybody bake cakes for the celebration will do wonders for the stature of the Court.

Looks like a significant drop since Roberts fumbled the Obamacare decision.

The poll was taken before the anti-abortion decision was reported. One can only assume the number is so low because the SC didn’t stop Obamacare.

Gee it seems like just yesterday the news press was crowing about court decisions.

But then that was following the marriage protection initiative slap downs.

It’s not the concept.

It’s those in these positions that are evil.

Ther Court, at best, is not motivated by popularity but by the law. Not everyone on the court subscribes to this principle. Still, a slim majority do and so there remains a slim hope we can save ourselves from the madness of those we elect as leaders.

I think they should do a poll on our confidence in polls.

Imagine what a boring country this would be if parents made sure that their children where taught about the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers the way that the Founding States had intended for those powers to be understood. /sarc

I’ll bet the libs have been sitting on this poll data waiting for a decision like today to release it.

The Supreme’s are isolated from normal society to a large degree. Makes it hard for them to understand the impact of some of their rulings. They look at the LAW, we as citizens look at the effect on our day to day lives............

Oh well, I suppose if they always ruled for leftists, they would be real popular. Of course, we get this poll today. LOL

What about the other 4 Justices, who collectively decided the case? IMHO, (as a foreigner, who pays some attention) Roberts seems to be the only one on the SCOTUS, who acts like an impartial judge. The other 8 are overly partisan. Perhaps it’s just an impression, formed because only the biggest cases are covered in the MSM — but, there are clear ideological divides on the Bench. That doesn’t seem right, for an institution that’s supposed to be above partisan politics.

But will SCOTUS members care?

They have lifetime jobs regardless which party is in charge.
