NYT: Scientists 'Startled' at Great Lakes' Rise; Another Warmist Prediction Is Biting the Dust
NewsBusters.org ^ | June 30, 2014 | Tom Blumer

Posted on 06/30/2014 7:09:53 PM PDT by Kaslin

An undated but clearly recent page at the National Wildlife Federation breathlessly warns readers, in a section entitled "Threats from Global Warming," that "Lake Erie water levels, already below average, could drop 4-5 feet by the end of this century, significantly altering shoreline habitat." A Thursday Huffington Post Canada Business entry observed that "the (Great Lakes) basin has experienced the longest extended period of lower water levels since the U.S. and Canada began tracking levels in 1918." Of course, it's because of "climate change."

Friday, Julie Bosman at the New York Times reported (HT Powerline) that "The International Joint Commission, a group with members from the United States and Canada that advises on water resources, completed a five-year study in April 2013 concluding that water levels in the lakes were likely to drop even farther, in part because of the lack of precipitation in recent years brought on by climate change." But the reason Bosman was on the story is because — fortunately for area residents, but unfortunately for "startled" global warming adherents claiming to be "scientists" — Great Lakes sea levels are rising again (bolds are mine throughout this post):

So global warming is supposed to cause oceans to rise, but the Great Lakes to lower? I don’t get it.

Don't you see, global warming is now causing the water to rise. It's all part of the climate change pattern. Sometimes it goes up sometimes it goes down.

We are now going to call it "climate schizophrenia". and it's caused by fossil fuels, greedy corporations, and conservatives. /s

Just about anyone here in the great lake states could have told them the lake levels were going to rise this summer. Excess rain last summer, ice preventing evaporation over the winter, and lots of rain again this summer.

Well, I guess the rise in lake levels is caused by man-made climate change. See, they were right all along!

The water rising is causing the lakes to lower because there’s more water going over Niagara Falls.

I’m guessing that they figure global warming (”heat”) somehow is related to droughts. Of course when a bunch of water is locked up in miles-thick sheets of ice - that is when you have a world wide lack of rain. Not just weather-related droughts.

“Niagara Falls!?”

Btw - lots of flooding in the Minneapolis area and elsewhere this year. Hitting the planting season hard too.

As a child we would float Minnehaha Creek on innertubes in the summer. Some spots would be even too low for an innertube and we would walk!

Obviously, global warming causes the water in the great lakes to flow downstream into the ocean. Only on odd years though.

Lakes Michigan, Huron and Superior are at least a foot higher than they were a year ago, and are expected to rise three more inches over the next month. Lake Ontario and Lake Erie are seven to nine inches higher than a year ago...

I am originally from MI-born in the Soo, raised in Port Huron. If I recall correctly the Great Lakes were said to be on a 7 year cycle between high and low water levels. I remember that a lot of people built houses on the St Clair River during periods of low water and then were pissed when the level rose and the wake of the ore boats, although they traveled at a greatly reduced speed, threatened to wash them away. Several cases of people shooting at them took place. Maybe they were unaware of the water level fluctuation but whatever happened to the permitting process?
On second thought that’s not a valid question as many of those concerned are brain dead. Case in point: My dad owned some land just outside the city limits. When they rerouted a highway, the runoff flooded his property. He complained and an inspector came to take a look. The inspector explained that the ditch was pointed directly toward the river so there was no problem. My dad had to clue him into the fact that the forces of gravity prevented water from running up hill no matter what direction the ditch pointed!
