Black Professor Body-Slammed
KPHO-TV ^ | 6/30/14 | Shawn Kline

An Arizona State University professor who was arrested by campus police last month is now accusing her arresting officer of using excessive force.

CBS 5 News obtained video of the incident which occurred on May 20. The video depicts an altercation between campus police officer Stewart Ferrin and Arizona State assistant English professor Ersula Ore.

I saw a portion of the video, and the cop SEEMS to me to be trying to avoid a confrontation.

This woman claimed to be a professor. The cops asked for ID. She didn't comply, I saw her just ask what would happen if she didn't.

The cop attempted to peaceably cuff her, and she resists. He WARNS HER and she continues to resist.

I have been critical of some cops recently. In Broward county Florida, two LEOs were caught on camera (unaware to them) TRULY slammed a man to the ground who was doing NOTHING....

That being said, this does NOT appear to be a case of police brutality. I could be wrong.

Thoughts?

MY MISTAKE....WRONG HEADLINE.

HEADLINE SHOULD SAY:
ASU professor arrested; accuses officer of ‘excessive force’

Can you fix??? I took the headline from a source that wouldn’t post.

The woman was not complying with the requests and directives of the police officer. He stated his reason for detaining her and she decided she’d be an ass because he asked for her ID. In my opinion, the LEO was way more than patient with this woman.

She got what she asked for. Just guessing here, but I’m guessing she had a buzz on and was feeling confrontational.

It looked to me like she “body slammed” herself. The officer showed more self restraint than I have.

Why does she think the law shouldn’t apply to her?

I know what would happen if I responded that way to a police officer. He was more patient that I would have been.

Hard to say what she was thinking when he asked for the ID. Typically, you pull out an ID and just what the problem is. Any other response....just gets you into hassle. Sounds like she was asking for trouble.

My understanding of Arizona law is that you are only required to show ID if you are stopped while driving. I don’t know what provision is made for giving a citation to a jaywalker who doesn’t show ID, because they have to be identified in some way.

I think both sides could have tried harder to keep this from escalating. However it is always better to comply with police requests and complain later if you feel there is a reason to do so.

You have the right to refuse to give a LEO your ID if you don’t want to. This thug cop just got pissed because someone questioned his authority. Gotta show the plebes who’s boss.

If the LEO stops you and tells you why, i.e., because of an infraction, I don’t think your right prevails. I could be wrong. Regardless, if he stops you for an infraction and whether you produce ID or not, if you act an ass and resist arrest, you get what you’re asked for.

The LEO gave her a reason for asking for ID. Probably Cause of a crime/infraction being committed. She was acting like an ass. He was not.

The woman involved kept referring to the street as being part of the campus. From the picture it sure looked like a busy street and not like any campus street I’ve ever seen. And even if it was a campus street, it was too busy for her to cross in the middle of it. She was risking an accident which would then have involved another driver. She refused to comply with the officer’s reasonable request.

She didn't comply, I saw her just ask what would happen if she didn't.

The courts have ruled you only have to provide a name, you do not have to provide ID. AZ law does not require showing ID. The AZ cop was wrong, big time.

Attitude or not, you don't go body-slamming folks for lack of ID, and jaywalking.

I think these are ASU campus police acting on the ASU campus .

They do have the right to ensure that non students have restricted access to the campus.

College campus are magnets for criminals, all kinds of undesirable people and predators.

Otherwise the ASU campus would be overrun with homeless, aggressive pan handlers, gang bangers, sex offenders, agitators, thieves , ext

And students, faculty and staff do an obligation to produce their ASU ID when requested to do so by campus police , it’s in the terms and conditions of their contractual relationship with the University

My read, cop totally knew this woman was going to turn this into some big racial incident of police harassment, which it may well be how the incident began. However, the cops knew they were being filmed and played this one by the book. This lady looks like a big jerk.

Yes, I see your point, we have to determine which criminals, undesirable people and predators belong there, and which do not ;-)

If this is the same Ersula (Jawanna) Ore, I can see why she’s at ASU now instead of Penn State. All you need do is see the student reviews of this trumped up excuse for a ‘professor’.

Yes, she is required to identify herself by name, but not produce any kind of ID. The officer seemed to be treating her like she was driving a car. He should have asked her for her name rather than continuously asking her to produce ID.
