Movie for Dominion Day: 49th Parallel
YouTube ^

Set in 1940 this is a uniquely Canadian war story. It follows crew members from a U-boat sunk in Hudson's Bay as they try make their way through an unfamiliar country and people to the, then, still neutral USA. Encounters include Hudson's post staff, trappers, natives, German Hutterite colonists, RCMP and more.

I saw this one or another like it. In this one,
Was the young German sailor who wanted to stay and bake bread murdered by the German officer?

Yep, that’s the one. The German soldier wanted to remain with a Hutterite community in Manitoba as a baker.

This is really a good film.

This is a brilliant film. Eric Portman and Anton Walbrook (The Nazi commander and the leader of the Hutterite community, respectively) are splendid in this. There are so many wonderful scenes in this film. Oh, and it displays Canada in all its magnificent beauty.

I believe so, but it’s been years since I watched it. Lawrence Olivier trying to play a French Canadian fur trapper was absolutely hilarious.

That movie made me want to stand up and wave the flag. They don’t make ‘em like that no more. I especially loved the ending with the US border guard.
