Guatemalan boy left for better life, died alone

SAN JOSE LAS FLORES, Guatemala — Gilberto Ramos wanted to leave his chilly mountain village for the United States to earn money to treat his mother’s epilepsy.

His mother begged him not to go. “The better treatment would have been if he stayed,” Cipriana Juarez Diaz said in a tearful interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. When he wouldn’t relent, she draped him with a white rosary for safe passage.

A month later, his decaying body was found in the Texas desert. Now, the boy has become a symbol for the perils faced by a record flood of unaccompanied children from Central America who are crossing illegally into the U.S.

Authorities said Monday that Gilberto was 11, making him one of the youngest known such children to die crossing the desert. He was shirtless, having likely suffered heat stroke, but still wearing the rosary.

“He was a good son,” Juarez said. “May God give me the strength to endure.”

It turned out Gilberto was 15. His parents explained Tuesday that they had taken several years to register his birth because of the remoteness of their village in Guatemala’s northern mountains. When they did, they had forgotten his actual birth date, so they listed the same date as his younger brother.

What mother would let their child go on such a dangerous trip?

And what person does not know the true age of their child. Is she that dumb?

No wonder central american despots have such an easy time to be in power.

Mrs. Ramos, I'm sorry for your loss, but educate yourself and fix your own country.

Maybe folks need to fix El Salvador, rather than trying to dump their problems on us.

The people who lured him and others to this country under false pretenses have his blood on their hands.

I guess this is another thing Obama and the Democrats should have on their conscience. But they really don’t care about anyone other than increasing their power.

It’s all white America’s fault!

With their low taxes and refusal to pass gay marriage!

Don’t you feel guilty?

Ultimately yes. Promises that couldn’t/wouldn’t be kept. He’d have had better chances appealing to churches in America to help his sick mother than to physically trek to America on a fool’s errand. But he didn’t know. He was lied to. It’s very hard for me to blame him.

Have not read the article, but my guess is if the Washington Compost published it, it was eventually an indictment against the US, no matter how subtle the piece reads. Am I wrong?

This is so tragic, this poor woman...

When they did, they had forgotten his actual birth date, so they listed the same date as his younger brother...

Wait, WHAT??

Well, let’s make sure the bad guys don’t get your home phone number. Stupid reporters.

What is the percentage of the $ they borrowed comparable to their yearly income?

If we want to stop kids from dying in the scorching hot RGV the most effective thing we could do is start shipping them back. Keeping them here looks like success and more will come.

“...these people are not all trying to sneak into a Workers Paradise??...”

We should be pressuring Cuba to accept three million of these “workers”. Then they would have the medical and dental care that makes the rest of the world envious.

A small price to pay for a future permanent Democrat majority.

The thing that always confuses me about these stories is that first we hear they live in such astounding poverty that there is no toilet and hardly any food. Then a few paragraphs later, they are borrowing $2,600 to pay the coyote.

Who are they borrowing it from, and if someone in their life is willing to loan them $2,600, why can't they have a working toilet? I mean, seriously, what am I missing??
