Japan’s cabinet has approved a landmark change in security policy, paving the way for its military to fight overseas.

Under its constitution, Japan is barred from using force to resolve conflicts except in cases of self-defense.

But a reinterpretation of the law will now allow “collective self-defense”—using force to defend allies under attack.

PM Shinzo Abe has been pushing hard for the move, arguing Japan needs to adapt to a changing security environment. …

Obama’s weakness is setting the stage for the next world war... Japan knows... and they’re being wise. If they don’t defend themselves, nobody will...

Japan is one of the few counters to China and with Obama in charge we won’t defend them anyways so better for Japan to realize this sooner than later...

Obama does not seem to realize that if a third world war breaks out, he will be a victim of it.

Japan needs to announce that they’re going to license-build RN Queen Elizabeth Class carriers, to be named Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, Soryu ...

Watching the ChiCom leadershp meltdown in a fit of apoplectic fury would be worth it alone ...

The Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan have announced the formation of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere and have pledged to work together to kick China’s big fat ass.

You mean their “Helicopter-Carrying Destroyers”?

Yup. Although the most recent class is just big enough to operate some F-35Bs. But not in a quantity large enough to take on the ChiComs.

But the Japanese are, with them (and the prior classes of smaller ships) signalling that they’re building up to a for-real carrier capability.

The QEs make sense because all the R&D and design work is done, no need to reinvent the wheel. And they’re sized right for what the Japanese need. They’re smaller than the Ford Class, but the Japanese need to project power regionally, not globally. The smaller decks (Spains Juan Carlos class, which the Aussies are buying, and the Italian Cavour are too small and limited.

It would not be the first time that the Japanese Navy used a British-designed/built warship (i.e. IJN Mikasa).

Yup. I think it was the Kongo Class battleships that were designed in the UK, with the class leader actually built there.

The current Kongo Class Aegis Destroyers are an interesting design. Based very much on the Burkes but with a tall superstructure evocative of the pagoda style used in their battleships. I’ve talked with ship architects and apparantly there’s no real need for them to be that tall, that it actually increases their radar signature (look at the South Korean Aegis ships, which are also based on the Burkes, for a comparisson). Which means the design is based in aesthetics, not functionality. So another message being sent ...

Japan wants rid of the American footprint on their islands, yet wants protection from old enemies.
Can’t have it both ways...

....”He has done a bang-up job of improving our international image, no?”.....

Pretty obvious to all, and other nations, that was not his intentions when he took office. His agenda is to destroy this nation on the International Stage...and he’s doing just that.

Unfortunately our Congress is enabling this.....they bark but never bite. In Obama’s case the only one who might be willing to act is our military to get him out.....the people haven’t the will to act themselves.

Actually, they can.

The US isn’t in Japan because we want to protect the Japanese (at least primarily, anyways), it’s because it’s in our strategic interest to be there both as a counter to the ChiComs AND as a means of restraining the Japanese from their barely-deniable desire to remilitarize in the face of the ChiCom threat.

The truth is that while most of Asia fears the ChiComs, they also HATE the Japanese. Their cultures have very long memories, and don’t look back too fondly on things like the Rape of Nanking, the Asian occupation, Unit 731 and Comfort Women.

The US leaving the area would be like an adult leaving a room full of aggressive, angry and competitive pre-teens, who don’t get along and are all armed with high-powered firearms.

The Japanese government pays for 100 percent of the cost of the American bases and personnel in Japan.
Might as well build their own...
