Working at a lab with a relatively low level-two biosafety rating, University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Yoshihiro Kawaoka has created a strain of flu that can completely escape the human immune system.

Most people today have a level of immunity to the H1N1 flu, which is now regarded as a relatively low threat. Kawaoka genetically manipulated H1N1 so it can "escape" our neutralising antibodies. This would make the human immune system—and population—unable to resist an outbreak.

The article isn't particularly detailed. Apparently what the research was after was a pre-pandemic form of the virus. By "escape the immune system" it isn't really clear what is meant - it is, after all, the immune response to the viral presence that kills an influenza victim, not the virus itself.

I'm up for some zombie action, though. Imagine it: soulless, mindless bodies shambling all over the country moaning and devouring anything in their path. Like Bob Hope said: Democrats.

It would take the kind of resolve of World War 2 and killing on that scale. That’s unthinkable in today’s politically correct world. We’ll have to wait until events run their course. Eventually, the west will lose a couple of cities either to dirty bombs or the real McCoy nukes. By that time it will be too late to do it with minimum casualties. Still it will take an enraged public to force the issue; a national will like after Pearl Harbor. Nothing less will suffice. By that time there will be so many Muslim’s in every western country the problem will be on our own doorstep too.

There are plenty of existing lethal viruses that can be used without making new ones UNLESS you are going to use them for vaccine development or to study the mechanism of pathogenesis. Even so as a long term Biosafety officer I would not have approved this work in a BSL 2 lab. Working with unknown lethal viruses that are communicable and for which there is no known treatment is BSL3 or BSL4 level work.
