I Couldn’t Turn My Abortion Into Art
New York Times ^ | July 2, 2014 | LISA SELIN DAVIS

...

Or, at least, it stopped the physical pain. The begging cabdriver and the woman on her ninth abortion and the shocking suction in my womb: It was too traumatic for me to make art of. Or maybe it was just that I wasn’t a good enough artist to transform that level of trauma into something that others could learn from and use. I had been taught that a woman’s right to choose was the most important thing to fight for, but I hadn’t known what a brutal choice it was.

I took a car service home, too, where my brother and his girlfriend met me and we ordered in. “We would have gone with you,” they said, “if you’d asked.”

“I was going to make a video,” I said. Reacting to the way my hands still shook, they tended to me as if I’d just walked miles in that blizzard. I knew then I’d never be a filmmaker.

About motherhood, though, I was wrong. Fifteen years later, happily coupled with a wonderful man, I gave birth to my first daughter; I now have two. I don’t wish I had a 20-year-old. I didn’t want that baby, with that man. Abortion rights, yes, I’ll always support them, but even all these years later, I wish the motto wasn’t “Never again,” but “Avoid this if there’s any way you possibly can, even if it’s legal, because it’s awful.”

I wish that someone had alerted me to the harshness of the experience, acknowledged the layers of regret that built and fell away as the months and years passed. I want my daughters to have the option of safe and legal abortion, of course. I just don’t want them to have to use it.

She couldn't turn it into art, so she turned it into literature. Oh, what an attention wh-- I mean, what a sensitive soul. And this doesn't really add anything to the national discourse on the topic. She says it's awful, but she still wants it to remain legal.

Uh, gee, okay, thanks for sharing. I'm pretty sure everyone already knew it wasn't like getting a manicure.

To listen to the propaganda, you'd never imagine it wasn't a more spiritually uplifting experience.

I didn’t want that baby, with that man.

Then perhaps you shouldn't have had sex with him.

Abortion is the sacrament of the left. However, try as they may, they can’t find any convincing way to turn abortion into something nice, pleasant, and delectable.
But they’re trying.

There was a column in the LA Times, years ago, written by a former abortion doctor. He had firmly believed that the right to choose trumped all. A couple came in, and wanted to abort, as the unexpected pregnancy would ‘interfere’ with their upcoming trip to Europe. The ‘procedure’ was scheduled for a Friday afternoon, but the equipment broke down. The doc rescheduled them to come in, first thing, Monday morning. The couple called back on Monday, had a change of heart, over the weekend, and were going to keep the baby.

Flash forward, five years. The doc took his young son to the country club pool. The boy was shy, introverted, and had a very difficult time, making friends. Another boy, the same age, came up to him, and asked him to play. After a short time, they became buddies, and even though it was long past time for the doc to leave, he stayed, exhilarated, as he watched this boy work magic, previously unseen, with his own son. Finally, the new pal’s father, called him out of the pool. The new friend said “’goodbye, hope to see you here, next week”. When the boy went to his parents, the doc had a hint of recognition; he realized that they were the couple who had canceled the abortion, years previously, and that the boy was the “embryo” who was slated to be discarded.

He closed down his clinic, the following week.

Liberal women think they are so brainy so why are they so irresponsible when it comes to pregnancy?

They use the same birth control methods and reasoning as 16 year old high school dropouts.

I’ll never understand the abortion proponents who talk about it as a traumatic or unpleasant experience.

If it is that, it must be because they recognize that it is a child, and understand that they are murdering a baby.

So why would you go down that road in the first place? Surely a condom is less trouble; abstinence even better. Pregnancy is well understood and utterly preventable.

If 30 million babies have gone before, would you not be able to seek even a kernel of knowledge from the world around you, and prevent this heartache?

It was only awful for her, I’m sure the baby enjoyed it immeasurably.

“This is as close as the NYT will come to publishing a pro-life piece”

I felt slight compassion for the woman until her final few sentences when I realized the article is just about her. No remorse for the baby she killed, just that no one warned her that it would be harder than she thought.

God bless that driver who tried to save that baby.

Exactly! You should never lie down with someone unless you accept that a child might come of the coupling. It’s what sex does. It feels awfully good too, but biologically its purpose is to make babies.

I heard on the Catholic Radio station that woman’s chances of having breast cancer goes up 60% after one abortion and 85% after three.

She had 10? I wonder if she’s haunted by their little souls? I met a lady who had 6 abortions and she was cook-coo. She said the babies haunted her.

That is an excellent article, thanks for sharing it. I applaud her for including the cab driver, who was a very admirable fellow. I’m very sorry she killed that baby, the world will never know what we have missed out on due to all the unique individuals who have been sent to such premature deaths.

I always wanted right-to-life to borrow the old anti-drug slogan and say: ABORTION KILLS - PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

Indeed. In the years of debate, Pro Life (as I am) vs. Pro “Choice”, that story stuck out, to me.
