BEIRUT -- The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) marched across eastern Syria near the border with Iraq on Thursday, seizing towns, villages and the country's largest oil field as rival rebel factions gave up the fight, activists said.

The extremist group -- which controls large parts of northern Syria and captured vast swaths of northern and western Iraq last month -- is now in almost full control of a corridor stretching from the Syrian border town of Boukamal to the government-controlled provincial capital of Deir el-Zour to the northwest.

Led by an ambitious Iraqi militant known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, ISIS this week unilaterally declared the establishment of an Islamic state, or caliphate, in the lands it has seized in Syria and Iraq....

Former CIA Director Michael Morell told "CBS This Morning" last month that ISIS' ... goal then is to use that as a safe haven to attack the United States," he warned.

ISIS Leader: ‘See You in New York’[ Daily Beast 6.14.14] When Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi walked away from a U.S. detention camp in 2009, the future leader of ISIS issued some chilling final words to reservists from Long Island. Al-Baghdadi was the leader of ISIS, the ultra-extremist army that was sweeping through Iraq toward Baghdad......

I wonder how long until the Islamic State with its black flag joins the UN.

And then joins the Human Rights Committee...

Lovely!

I notice that this has virtually dropped out of the MSM. I guess they don’t want to alarm us until ISIS is taking over the WH...wait, they already have...

Even Al-Jazeera is focusing on Israel/Pali news rather than telling the full story about erstwhile Iraq and Syria.

Seriously grim news, really.

I notice that this has virtually dropped out of the MSM.

They're giving Obama room to fix things behind the scenes before it flares into a full blown crisis. Can you imagine them doing this for Bush? Bush not only had to fight the war, he had to deal with treasonous media.

When Fallujah fell in January, it was only a one day story. From that point the media should have been covering it. But neither the MSM nor Obama did a thing to stop the advance.

rivals “give up”

The “rebel groups” that Obama wants to spend a half BILLION dollars training are going to become part of ISIS.

True. I remember all the articles about Fallujah when Bush was president. And now it’s just vanished in one day, and the media really doesn’t care because it would make Obama look bad.

Beyond grim. Anybody who thinks this guy can’t do what he says is a fool.

Supposedly, the caliph is supposed to get Mohammed’s sword and battle flag, which are in a museum in Turkey. I betcha he’s going to start asking for them...and because the Turks are in a state of confusion right now, who knows what will happen? I read that ISIS is trying to destabilize Turkey (that is, make it even more unstable than it already is).

What percentage of the worlds oil reserves do they now hold? And, how do they get it to market, physically?

Given...

Who supports ISIS? (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Behrein and Turkey)

Who opposes ISIS? (Russia, Iran, Kurds, Lebanon, Syria ruling class, Jordan ruling class...and kinda sorta for appearance sake the USA)

The Saudi princes are are friends and fear ISIS but who knows about the population and the army. Islamists have many supporters in Saudi Arabia. Remember when Louis XVIII sent his army to stop Napoleon after his return from Alba. Every time Louis sent more troops to stop him they would end up joining Napoleon. The same thing could happen with the Saudi army and ISIS. On the other hand, the army could be loyal to the king. It is a big unknown; I expect even to the Saudi who must be very concerned at the moment.
