Check your pockets and dig into the couch cushions if you can rustle up some spare change to the tune of $400,000, you could be the owner of your very own town in South Dakota. The man who owns Swett, S.D. and its bar, single house, workshop, three trailers and 6.16 acres of land is looking to sell.
Sure, $400,000 is a lot of money for anybody. But instead of just owning a single house, you could crown yourself Grand High Empress/Emperor of this unincorporated hamlet about two hours from Rapid City, reports the Rapid City Journal.
The sole owner of Swett and one of its two inhabitants, along with his wife is selling everything in order to focus on his traveling concession business.
Like I say, I hate to get rid of it, he said Benson, after listing the town last week. If I dont sell it, if I dont sell it this first year, I would probably keep it.
Swett used to have as many as 40 people but has now shrunk down to only two residents and handful of buildings. At least the bar sounds like its there to stay, as a meeting place for the locals.
This place is pretty much where the highway ends and the Wild West begins, joked one patron of the bars previous rough reputation, though now its not out of place for families to come there for a meal.

Your chance to buy a town and retire in middle America
Does the place come with oil?
Maybe a freeper could buy it and set up a ‘freeper retirement community’....
400k for a town? As long as there is water and electric...sounds good
I already own a republic. I've named my two acres out in the desert The Wren Republic.
The wife and I have seceded.
Life is sweet in The Wren Republic!
A Galt’s Gulch of a sort?
- Rename the town "Reaganville."
- Enact a land-value tax
- Opt out of Common-core and all state and federal education regulations
- Mandatory gun ownership
unincorporated towns can legally be anexed by incorporated cities and such.
Now HERE is a good idea ;-)
Do a map search on this one.
Buy and Secede!!
Can the buyer rename it?
Thanks for the ping. I don’t have $400K — although it would be worth considering if the mineral rights come with it.
A damn good idea. Maybe a solution
I’d go for it! How many of us? A few k and we are like this website- free!
I’d be happy to contribute.
I’d be ready to leave where I am by Jan of next year.
A Freeper’s paradise or Galt’s Gulch
Wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy some land and create your own town?
