A Charleston businessman and reality TV star has announced his plans to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Lindsey Graham.
Thomas Ravenel, former state treasurer who resigned from office after his arrest on drug charges, announced his run Friday. He still must deliver 10,000 signatures from registered voters to state election officials by July 15 to get on the ballot.
He stopped in Greenville later in the day to attend the Red, White and Blue Festival.
En route to Greenville, Ravenel confirmed his run with The Greenville News.
Ive always felt impelled to do this, Ravenel said. Its not an act of self-aggrandizement; its more I feel its a duty.
Ravenel said he wanted to run for the Senate seat because government has gotten too big and the country was headed towards a doomsday scenario.
He said he chose to run as an independent because he disagreed with both Republican and Democratic policies, and said both parties were being co-opted by special interest groups.
Im looking to give the American voter who sees these inconsistencies a choice, he said. Both parties are wrong. You get a false choice. I could vote for the party that represents the warfare state or I could vote for the party that represents the welfare state.
Ravenel, son of former South Carolina congressman Arthur Ravenel, cited health care, foreign policy, Medicare and Medicaid policy and immigration as issues he would focus on.
He added that he would also fight to uphold a better checks and balances system within the government by standing up to policies like those allowing the president to appoint members of the judiciary.

X Not Lindsay
I’d vote for a Democrat to get rid of Linda.
Harry Reid agrees with you.
I don’t know much about Ravenel, but at least he’s the anti-Graham.
It’ll be interesting to see if he fleshs his immigration stance out along the lines of NumbersUSA as Brat did.
Ravenel is a coke head. I’ll not vote for him.
Obama agrees with you.
Is there a kopek’s worth of difference between Reid and McCommie?
Linda only disagrees with him at primary time.
Yes. I believe Ted Cruz would be more effective in a majority party than the minority.
People still think the GOP can win the senate?
Whatcha wanna bet that Lindsey Graham will keep Ravenel out of the Debates?
Ravenel is a coke head. Ill not vote for him.
Hey, coke heads need representation too.
I love Arthur but his son is a screw up.. ain’t voting for him
Cool, an opportunity to send grahmnesty to sepnd more time with his family.
“Drug charges”? He might as well throw in the towel before spending all his money as BOTH the rhinos and the demodummies will crucify him.
The guy’s probably looking to get bought off by the GOPe
Might need more money to support his habit.
People still think the GOP can win the senate?
I did up until a couple of months ago, but now, I don’t think so. I think the RINO Party will lose Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisiana, Michigan and possibly South Carolina (thank you Thomas Ravenel) and definitely Mississippi if Thad Cochran is the nominee. Colorado and Arkansas are not looking good for the RINO Party these days either. And frankly, I don’t shive a git.
Hey, awww, yur just jealous of the hot chicks that he hangs with. ;-]
some of them need to eat, man, they are skinny.
Would you rather have a coke addict or a guy that snorts McCraps a$$?
“Yes. I believe Ted Cruz would be more effective in a majority party than the minority.”
Yes indeed. But the problem we have is the Linda and her pall from Arizona, THE MAVERICK do not agree with Ted on anything
GOPe to the rescue of an unauthorized thought on a thread. Thanks!
Obama and McConnell are in a desperate struggle to determine which one will lose the Senate. McConnell was in the lead, assisted by the GOPe and Cochran, but then Obama pulled the “open the floodgates, punish America” gambit. I am still all for dumping McConnell and Cochran and Linda, and taking our chances, since McConnell in charge is not a damn different than Harry for the next two years. Obama may be causing such a tsunami that we can afford to make a few examples of Rinos. I like Ted’s influence in the Senate even more if McConnell, Linda and Thaddeus are no longer in it.
With McConnell in charge, Ted Cruz has less influence than he does now. And it will be the majority leader fundraising against him, not some loser who lost his seat.
