Thomas Ravenel Says He Will Qualify as an Independent Candidate for U.S. Senate in South Carolina

Thomas Ravenel, a former State Treasurer of South Carolina, says he will submit over 10,000 valid signatures by the July 15 deadline. See this story. If he succeeds, he will be the first independent candidate for U.S. Senate in the history of government-printed ballots.

South Carolina has been one of four states in which there had never been an independent candidate for either Governor or U.S. Senator on a government-printed ballot, but it seems likely that independent candidates for both offices will qualify in that state this year. The other states that have never had an independent candidate for either office are Indiana, New Mexico, and North Carolina.

From the article cited:

Thomas Ravenel – a reality TV star and former Republican state treasurer who was forced to resign from office after being indicted on federal drug charges – announced Friday that he would run as an independent candidate against GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Ravenel made his announcement in an email to reporters, prior to attending a July 4th rally in Greenville, South Carolina.

After stepping down as state treasurer in 2007, Ravenel served 10 months behind bars after he plead guilty to federal drug charges. In his email, Ravenel acknowledged his conviction, writing that “I’m an imperfect messenger.”

The email also said that Ravenel “expected to be attacked over the issue – and was ready to defend himself.”

Ravenel has recently been in the spotlight for being one of the stars last season on the reality TV show “Southern Charm.” Ravenel earned the nickname “T-Rav” on the Bravo series which chronicles the personal and professional lives of six friends who reside in Charleston.

“Irrespective of how they view their potential victories, I prefer a majority in the senate to push back on 0bama.”

How odd that you should use a Handle of “Pricipled”. Does not appear to be anything principled about your comment

Please explain what a Senate controlled by McConnell would do to Obama's agenda that would be different under Harry Reid? Would McConnell pass a law defunding Obamacare? Doubtful, but if he did, would he shut down the government when Obama vetoes the budget over it? Would McConnell raise the debt ceiling and give Obama all the spending he demands? Would McConnell, in his position as majority leader, use his power of the purse to get GOPe challengers their funding to take on Ted Cruz in Texas? You bet.

I want to know what we get from a majority for the next two years. I don't think we get anything out of it, frankly, except a lot of stupid gestures that Obama uses to fire up his base. If Ted Cruz could be made majority leader, that would be different. The House had Newt in 1994, and he was a conservative strategist who could make Clinton cave. No one like that around in the GOPe. So the hell with McConnell, Linda and Cochran. Get a conservative in the White House in 2016 and then we can talk about the things the Senate can do.

And then there’s the amnesty that McConnell would pass.

OK that's what so many disagree about - whether it would be better to have a majority but to include a few rinos up this fall... or to allow Harry Reid to have the majority but expel a few rinos.

Anyone who does not work to limit the size of the Fed. G’ment is a rent seeking dictator wanabe. Just like in the movie The Man who would be King

You are not going to get a Republican Senate. Stolen elections will cut the margin to 52 or 51 and then one or two will flip like 2007.

I’m used to it.

I have family in SC, btw, and Ravenel is not good news. He’s from a very wealthy, powerful old SC family and he’s revealed himself, on numerous occasions, to be a jerk. He got a lot of people a few years ago before his drug bust because his positions appeared to be conservative, but they were basically just self-serving.

I don’t think graham is good, incidentally, but he’s fairly popular in SC and we need to keep that seat.

or to allow Harry Reid to have the majority but expel a few rinos.

I'm not for "allowing" Harry Reid to have a majority, but I am willing to take the chance that we don't get a majority if we get rid of Bitch, Linda and Thaddeus. Maybe even Cornyn. They hate us, they absolutely are more of an enemy to conservatism than Obama, because they are on the inside stabbing us in the back. Obama is pissing so many people off that even losing 2-4 RINOs there is a chance that the tsunami will give Republicans the Senate, and give someone less of a pushover an opening to be Majority Leader. Someone who has ties to both camps, perhaps, like Ron Johnson. That's what I'd like to see, a majority while a few RINOs lose out for not being conservative enough. That might send a message. If we lose the majority because of taking that chance, I don't think we've lost much anyway.

Well you were right DJ, convicted cokehead and reality tv “star” Tom Ravenel is running as an indie, on a Paultard platform or so it would seem (he endorsed Paul for President in 2012).

Hopefully he doesn’t take enough to elect the democrat.

I stated my belief back in 2008 that Ravenel was targeted by the Dubya White House for destruction when it was clear he would be running to take out Graham. It was curious that he was “allowed” to run and beat an incumbent Dem Treasurer in 2006 when officials supposedly knew about his drug problems, but as soon as the Graham challenge materialized, they unleashed the dogs.

I will have zero sympathy if Ravenel’s candidacy this time helps take out Graham. Payback, as they say, is a bitch.

If “officials” knew he was a cokehead (which I’m not sold on at all) and were ignoring it until he was thinking about running against Graham then they were wrong for ignoring it initially, not for revealing it later!!!!! The democrats would have would have found out eventually, certainly if he were a Senate nominee, and that would have been awful.

I have no sympathy for drug addicts who have their careers ruined, especially if they’re Paulestinians.

I remember reading that they knew about it for some time and effectively sat on it. They knew prior to his race for Treasurer. I believe it was payback to Graham for his support for Dubya on immigration/open borders.

In any event, as you may recall, I endorsed Graham’s Democrat opponent in 2008. I will not shed a tear to see his ass booted from office this year. The collaborationists need to go, Cochran, Graham, McConnell, et al. They remain a cancer in the Senate.

Well it was wrong to sit on it, drug addicts and other criminals in our ranks should be exposed and removed as soon as possible to minimize damage to the party.

“as you may recall, I endorsed Graham’s Democrat opponent in 2008”

Yeah I remember, the Buchanan/Paulite oddball who joined the democrats over the Iraq War. I only support replacing Graham with something better.

Well he said he would restore the filibuster.
