Thomas Ravenel Says He Will Qualify as an Independent Candidate for U.S. Senate in South Carolina

Thomas Ravenel, a former State Treasurer of South Carolina, says he will submit over 10,000 valid signatures by the July 15 deadline. See this story. If he succeeds, he will be the first independent candidate for U.S. Senate in the history of government-printed ballots.

South Carolina has been one of four states in which there had never been an independent candidate for either Governor or U.S. Senator on a government-printed ballot, but it seems likely that independent candidates for both offices will qualify in that state this year. The other states that have never had an independent candidate for either office are Indiana, New Mexico, and North Carolina.

From the article cited:

Thomas Ravenel – a reality TV star and former Republican state treasurer who was forced to resign from office after being indicted on federal drug charges – announced Friday that he would run as an independent candidate against GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Ravenel made his announcement in an email to reporters, prior to attending a July 4th rally in Greenville, South Carolina.

After stepping down as state treasurer in 2007, Ravenel served 10 months behind bars after he plead guilty to federal drug charges. In his email, Ravenel acknowledged his conviction, writing that “I’m an imperfect messenger.”

The email also said that Ravenel “expected to be attacked over the issue – and was ready to defend himself.”

Ravenel has recently been in the spotlight for being one of the stars last season on the reality TV show “Southern Charm.” Ravenel earned the nickname “T-Rav” on the Bravo series which chronicles the personal and professional lives of six friends who reside in Charleston.

we need to keep that seat.

You don't have that seat, the GOPe has that seat. They always vote conservative when it doesn't matter because there is no chance for the bill to pass anyway. Watch the cloture votes where a RINO will vote for cloture then claim they voted against a bill that they know would pass once it came to a vote.

Since the former SC Democrat Chairman himself, Dick Harpootlian, declared Graham to be the Democrat Senator from South Carolina, I expect they’ll do their darndest to help him in November to a third term. If not, Graham will have made his bed.

I don’t know what Dick Harpootlian is up to but I am 1000% certain that the current rat chairman, the DSCC, Barak Obama, and Harry Reid, will be supporting the democrat nominee, State Senator Brad Hutto.

Yes, there’s that. Good point. If we get the White House and both houses of Congress in 2016, we need to make sure the filibuster is not restored, in order to fix all the things that the Democrats broke since 2009. After a few years, if we aren’t doing daily battle with marxists who seek to destroy America, maybe the Senate can consider the filibuster. Personally, I never liked it in its modern iteration. I am all for delaying legislation for a few weeks to prattle on in opposition and hope you get people to change their minds. But at the end of the day, all nominations and legislation only need 50 votes under the Constitution.
