The Office of Personnel Management maintains a list of the amount of civilian workers that each branch of the government has, in addition to their salary amounts. Although it does not mention individuals by name nor their positions, the numbers are quite surprising when the data is adjusted for an annual income of $180,000 or more.
Some facts to consider:
Note again that this list is of civilian workers no members of the military are included; neither does it include the Judiciary Branch or congressional staff. By way of contrast, the percentage of those earning more than $180,000 at the Department of Defense, the largest agency of the government, is just under 1/2%.
Historically, the idea of working for the government included a trade off of sorts: a reduction in income relative to private industry in exchange for increased job security and benefits. It seems as though that reality has changed.
Given the scandal at the VA over wait times and patient care, one must wonder what all of these high-paid individuals are doing. One thing we do know is that the VA has paid over $200 million in wrongful death payments and an additional $645 million in medical malpractice since 2001.
A reasonable conclusion would be that these thousands of high-income individuals are doing something other than actually earning their pay.
Our overlords deserve every penny of it and more. Attempting to run every aspect of our lives is hard work.
If they’re doctors treating vets I don’t mind the salary.
How many of the VA people were physicians? I suspect that people with MD degrees are expensive.
Amazing how considering it is a drought for many american households, that so many big fish are still out there in the shady spots on ol’ Man MoneyFlow River..
Just waiting to be noodled .. For the pickin’,, but I doubt you’ll see anyone in a three piece suited crowd of DC wading in any time soon.
I don’t think there are very many MDs in DOT - that’s 3% of the workforce!
Does not apply anymore.
Only trying to explain the high salaries in VA, no where else.
1) In no way are there over 18 thousand docs working at the VA..so its mostly “leadership” that sit in meetings all day and can’t lead.
2)Recruiting for doctors ( especially psychiatrists)is very, very difficult for the VA because a) there is a shortage nationwide b) the VA is not competitive with the private sector.
cut the VA “leadership” at all levels by 50% and hire more front line workers! No waiting lists then.
How about the EPA, Dept of NO-Education, the NO Energy Dept, the Dept of the Interior( that don’t know a cow from a turtle)and the NO justice Dept.
Mostly Agreed, but I think 90% is a better number.
Probably the professional journeyman level in the D.C. area is GS-14
How else would Obama keep them Obeying his Orders
You beat me to it. I was guessing that is the case.
DOT = Air Traffic Controllers.
They earn their keep.
The reality this demonstrates is the explosion in the SES ranks. The DOT numbers probably account for the number of SES in the FAA. In the VA you not only capture some medical staff, but the management in the medical facilities. Many of those in management are responsible for the VA scandal as they directed the falsification of numbers in order to trigger bonuses for themselves.
Loyal government workers would kickback 75% of their salaries to support the party and the cause.
My attitude? If you’re getting a government paycheck and you’re not a uniformed member of the Armed Forces you’re very probably my enemy.Either an enemy of my wallet or my freedoms.
