Pickup trucks customized to spew black smoke into the air are quickly becoming the newest weapon in the culture wars.
"Coal Rollers" are diesel trucks modified with chimneys and equipment that can force extra fuel into the engine causing dark black smoke to pour out of the chimney stacks. These modifications are not new, but as Slate's Dave Weigel pointed out on Thursday, "rolling coal" has begun to take on a political dimension with pickup drivers increasingly viewing their smokestacks as a form of protest against environmentalists and Obama administration emissions regulations.
Last month, Vocativ noted many coal rollers focus their fumes on "nature nuffies," or people who drive hybrids, and "rice burners," or Japanese-made cars.

Conservatives Are Purposely Making Their Cars Spew Black Smoke To Protest Obama And Environmentalists
I only wish I could have Mooch and Barry’s faces the target of the smoke! Cough cough!
Isn’t black smoke from a diesel merely a byproduct of steppin on the go pedal?
Just burn an old tire on Earth Day...it’s easier.
To the point of making a car disappear in the smoke? Nope!
This is pretty hard to believe. Sounds like the stuff of urban legend. Would somebody REALLY spend the money to do this?
See the videos at the linky.
I’d rather have an after burner for tailgate huggers.
This Thread Topic outlived its usefulness yesterday. Dupe...
HuffPo has a story on it.
Never seen it before. Oh well.
That’s what they do in south africa. Different purpose but still smokey. May trade the Hemi in for a coal fired motorized truck. Of course I’ll have to hire a stoker. ;>}
Conservatives? The ones around here doing that are white trash that just want to be as obnoxious as the ghetto boom-boom car drivers. If you asked them if they were protesting anything they wouldn’t know what you were talking about.
You can purchase fuel management software that will make a diesel pickup blow black smoke in quantities that would make a steam engine blush.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
“Of course Ill have to hire a stoker.”
Naw! Just marry one! “Stoke that coal, and make me a sammich!”
The writer really does not know what he is talking bout. He talks about cars spew black smoke. Then he talks about modified truck with chimneys?
Any truck or vehicle that purposely does this is making themselves a target for severe retaliation. A lot of people (Prius owners included) don’t need much of a reason to develop a hot case of Road Rage.
“Douchebag with a diesel truck” and “conservative” are not the same thing.
Why are annoying kids called "conservatives" when they make their cars smoke, but not when they put oversize chrome wheels on their cars?
“A lot of people (Prius owners included) dont need much of a reason to develop a hot case of Road Rage.”
Against armed conservatives?
(Truck intentionally “coal rolling” a bunch of bikers going up a hill...) What an a-hole!
Guy gets yelled at by a fat Prius lady for having a diesel truck
Why do I suspect that two guys in Podunk did this, and the writer decided to call it a “movement” by “conservatives”?
For example, well over half the states require emissions testing, so this would be effectively outlawed. And even in the non testing states, if a police officer sees your vehicle belching smoke, he will likely pull you over for safety reasons.
Maybe I missed something in the linked article, but I didn’t see anyone “admit” to being a conservative. Just because they don’t like obammy or environmentalists? That does not a conservative make.
There’s nothing (conservatively) wrong with driving a Prius. I don’t have one, but they’re actually pretty cool technology-wise. Conservatives were actually some of the first conservationists, i.e. conserving and providing for reasonable use of our natural assets.
That said, I’d have a hard time convicting any Prius owner who was coal rolled, suffered a bout of road rage, and took it out on an instigator’s truck.
My motorhome puts out some smoke, but only because it’s 41 years old. One day a guy parked next to me in a parking lot and turned up his stereo. So I started my engine. He moved.
Keep it off when the cops are around and when the vehicle is tested.
Didn’t you know that everyone who drives a big diesel is a conservative these days?
Didn’t realize white trash could afford 50k for a diesel pickup to start out with, prior to any mods.
Geez in my younger days it was see how loud you could get your 440 six pack. 3 inch straight pipe connected to a set of Hooker Headers was a start.
You should laugh at those idiots who use the oversize chrome wheels/low profile tires. I know someone who did that, and he has to carry an air pump with the car wherever it goes. There’s so little rubber on those extremely low profile tires, they won’t seal well to the rims, the side wall gets tore up easily, they cost a fortune, and it feels like you’re riding with solid metal wheels (which you almost are).
None of this has to do with coal rolling of course...8)
The dickhead in the truck is coaling people simply because they're bicycling?
I bicycle. I bicycle ALOT and not because I'm some "greenie" or am looking to save the planet by not driving. No, I bicycle for my HEALTH. I do it to lose weight. I'm also a Conservative. A Conservative who drives a gas guzzling SUV that gets a whopping 14 mpg.
The guy in this video is nothing more than some ignorant dickhead who thinks he's making a point? Right, and what point would that be --- that he's nothing more than an ignorant redneck dickhead? Ah, that must be it.
The only thing spewing black smoke screens is Obama.
Uh, she ain’t buyin’. LOL!
Oh I forgot emission testing. Tell me how many stickers you want and give me an hour. Payment in advance required
Typical emissions testing has looked for catalytic converter bypasses for years. By bypassing it, your mileage goes up considerable, at least in older cars. Computer controlled cars likely adjust for it.
Even if you created such a bypass for a diesel, you would likely get so much waste carbon in your exhaust that your particulate readings would still be high 20 miles later.
Around here they usually have the stars and bars flying from a pole mounted in the bed--between the coal pipes.
We have enough jacks here in Houston that spew crap out their tailpipes to put them to shame.
What a bunch of male bovine manure... liberals are easy to annoy...
Being a penny-pincher, all I see is unburned carbon pouring out the stack. When I was in the coal burning business, we went to incredible lengths to make sure there was the absolute amount of unburned carbon in the fly ash. That’s the engineer in me.
Which ends up going into the ground.
We are a carbon-based life form, dependent on the soil for our very existence. That includes lots of carbon.
A little more never hurts.
If I made my chainsaw do that would it count?
Think hot rods modified with tanks and plumbing to "shoot flames" out of the exhaust. Very popular with some of the "second childhood" set. I stopped by my local post office, and two guys (old farts about my age) had the hood up on a Chevelle 427 (obviously lovingly restored) with the mod.
If it’s two-cycle, it’s probably doing that already...and it’s probably two-cycle.
