Oregon mental hospital to honor 'forgotten souls'

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — They were dubbed the "forgotten souls" — the cremated remains of thousands of people who came through the doors of Oregon's state mental hospital, died there and whose ashes were abandoned inside 3,500 copper urns.

One of the abandoned wings of the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon.

Discovered a decade ago at the decrepit Oregon State Hospital, where "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was filmed, the remains became a symbol of the state's — and the nation's — dark history of treating the mentally ill. A research effort to unearth the stories of those who moved through the hospital's halls, and to reunite the remains with surviving relatives, takes center stage Monday as officials dedicate a memorial to those once-forgotten patients.

If you would like more information about what's happening in Oregon, please FReepmail me. I lost my Oregon list when my computer crashed recently, so please send me your name by FReepmail if you were on the previous list.

I drive by that hospital every now and then. It looks creepy from the outside, with all the barred windows. My mom had to work there once when the state workers went on strike. It’s empty now, all the nuts let loose on the streets but still the huge building stands there for some reason.

Not my favorite place to drive either. Less creepy than the red brick building was, though.

Yeah. Our new method of turning them loose with a bottle of pills so they can become homeless and criminals is so much better.

It’s so much better to give them pills and let them loose on our streets. When some of them subsequently mass murder people, so what? It gives the left a reason to rant about gun control.

In other words, some people probably should be committed. That doesn’t mean they should be treated poorly or be committed easily, but some people really do deserve to be institutionalized.

Much better to turn them loose and arm them and let them take out other souls. /sarc

Good.

Care for the mentally ill swung from one extreme to the other.

Plain common sense. But the compassionate crowd would rather they starve in the gutter.

Dark history, my butt.

The darkest thing that happened was basically outlawing these hospitals and unleashing the truly impaired on others and leaving them vagrants.

As far as remains, it’s nice if they can give them proper respect.

Maybe Oregon could use it to house some of the Illegals coming this way.

I’m surprised none of the ferals have stolen the urns for their copper.

THAT’S how cynical I’ve become over the last 6 or so years. Tomorrow will tell in Murrieta if I can come back. I hope so.

Where are all the concern trolls who were outraged about the bodies found in the converted septic tank at the Catholic-run home for unwed mothers in Ireland? I’m sure they’ll be here any time now, lol.

Indeed, right after my husband worked there. the State of Oregon closed down Fairview — mental home for children. I wonder how many ended up here.
