The family of a woman who was repeatedly punched in the face and head by a policeman has said they will sue on her behalf, local media report.
Footage posted on YouTube last week shows a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer straddling the woman and hitting her at least 11 times.
The CHP says they are investigating and have suspended the officer.
Her family said they would be filing a civil rights lawsuit on her behalf, according to local broadcaster KTLA.
Civil rights groups say they are set to meet police officials on Monday.
Earl Ofari Hutchinson, president of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable told the Los Angeles Times he wanted to see an independent justice department investigation. 'So shocking'
Police have said the woman was endangering herself and motorists walking on the shoulder of a busy highway in the west of Los Angeles.
A video of the incident was captured by passing motorist David Diaz, who told the Associated Press news agency the officer arrived as the woman was walking off the highway, but she turned around after the officer shouted something to her.
"He agitated the situation more than helped it," said Mr Diaz, who started filming soon after.
When the recording starts, the officer is seen trying to detain the barefooted woman, who walks a few steps away from him. Jump media player Media player help Out of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue.
The officer involved in the incident has not been identified
But the officer is seen forcing her to the ground, briefly struggling with her before repeatedly punching her. A few moments later, a plainclothes officer enters the picture and helps his colleague put the woman in handcuffs.
The woman is being treated in hospital and undergoing psychiatric evaluation.

You mean the assault by the mentally deranged and dangerous woman to the police officer - assault?
There was a thread a day or two ago and - believe it or not, even on this webiste - many were taking the cops side.
Liberal idiots have impressive imaginations. They make up stuff as they go along.

Sorry. This post wasn’t intended for this thread.
I needed a longer weekend.
I remember, years ago, back in the bad old days a topless woman walking right down the middle of East 14th Street in Manhattan (it’s not a highway, but it’s a main, two way street), waving her arms up and down and babbling incoherently. It was broad daylight, I think it was maybe a Saturday morning.
Of course, this was NYC, and there were no cell phones in those days, I doubt anyone even called the cops.
I’m guessing the woman in this CA incident has some problems, but I’m not sure sitting on her and punching her in the face repeatedly is the correct response.
We can’t keep school children from illegally crossing our border, but our LEOs can beat the living heck out of every woman, crazy person and oldster.
Something is way out of whack in this country, and while Obama has introduced and maintained a very toxic atmosphere, I think the problems go well beyond him or his administration.
“If a person can not deal with....”
Oh, he dealt with it all right. Maybe not by the book, or how YOU would have handled it. But he DID deal with it.
I did not see the video, so I’m not passing judgment for or against here. I’m just repeating many comments from the other day by others who are giving the cop a pass.
No apologies needed. THAT comment applies ANYWHERE. Even to this thread as they quoted some apologists for that woman.
uh... assault? let’s not forget the battery.
The best way to stay safe when interacting with a cop is to have a dog with you. If he can shoot the dog he’ll get his jollies off and leave you alone.
This is going to be a rerun of the Fullerton, Ca. case.
You have a deranged homeless person endangering the public. The police are called and the large individual is crazy and not cooperating with the police. So the police take her/him down and beat her/him for resisting.
California taxpayers will have to pay for it ....again
from the clip, i just do not get it... that they would give the cop a pass... she is walking... i suppose walking away from him... but i do not see that he had to take her down that way and punch her--repeatedly...
but i have a question for anybody... is it illegal to walk along the shoulder of a freeway barefoot? i have walked along the shoulder of a freeway in pumps, after work... with a gas can in my hand... was that illegal?
In the near-term basis, the people who loan money to California will have to pay for it. Once on runs deficits, the size of the deficit and of particular expenditures tends to be overlooked.
This is a great opportunity for liberals — especially blacks — to profile. All cops are bad is how so many of them think.
Earl Ofari is a race hustler pa excellence.
Not quite at the Jesse Jackson shakedown level, but trying.
I agree with you and have thought the same thing - but I have yet to come up with a proper response. What should be done? Try and talk to her calmly (maybe he already tried that)? Call more back up? What then? If she still refuses, then what? Try and take her down? Still resisting? How many punches then are allowed? Tasing? Seems pretty severe....
The decision tree for most people would probably default to just letting her walk the damn highway - not worth the trouble, paperwork, and political fall-out, especially with all those cell phone cameras around. No one will miss a crazy women who is hit by a car. Sadly, that's how policing is done in the 3rd world, and that's where we are headed.
Are you truly not able to differentiate a busy multi-lane freeway with speed limits of 65 miles per hour and a street in Manhattan, nor the relative dangers to other lives of a human being in the middle of one or the other?
It’s not legal to walk on the freeway, period.
You get yourself and others kills quick that way.
“There was a thread a day or two ago and - believe it or not, even on this webiste - many were taking the cops side.”
FR is open to all, so it has it’s share of LEO deviates and lurkers.
“The decision tree for most people would probably default to just letting her walk the damn highway”
I say this with all due respect and do not mean anything personal, but that is the most stupid things I’ve heard.
Are you unfamiliar with the 10 freeway? Do you know what freeways are? How fast people drive?
If you want multiple deaths you let her walk on the freeway.
“Im guessing the woman in this CA incident has some problems, but Im not sure sitting on her and punching her in the face repeatedly is the correct response.”
...but I’m NOT SURE sitting on her and punching her in the face REPEATEDLY IS THE CORRECT RESPONSE.
You are NOT SURE??? I’ll bet if she were a family member you’d get SURE instantaneously! Just how could you have any doubt?
Yet your comment - a timely reminder - remains true, accurate, and valid.
It’s impossible to judge without a lot more information, and nobody is going to ask me to decide.
But, more and more, it seems like the police are unable to effective restrain people without using extremely violent force. Even the unarmed, even the elderly, even females, even in situations where they very much outnumber the suspect(s).
So, something is wrong: attitude, training, both?
All I know is that I would be very, very reluctant to call the cops for help in any circumstance. I’ve never felt that way before.
Then by all means, go out and beat the crap out of the woman to keep her from walking the median of the highway. Hope your police career goes well after that. You'll also enjoy being a political target of the race-baiting left as well.
“So, something is wrong: attitude, training, both?

It’s a microcosm of everything in life here today. You can’t feel good about calling the cops because of your reasoned belief that they have no intention of helping a situation or operating within the law. And you can’t tell your doctor what’s ailing you for fear that it will end up biting you on the a$$ in some government database or havint some agents show up to take your guns on some contrived charge that you are mentally unfit.
All we can hope for today is not needing either a cop or a doctor!
“The CHP says they are investigating and have suspended the officer.”
This is for the few psycho’s who came on the threads about this incident praising the cop for an exemplary job. Obviously he was not following police policy by viciously attacking an unarmed woman.
Read my post #29 and pay close attention to the word “psycho” That’s you. Just so you know.
i guess except for those working time off on a weekend work program...
