The family of a woman who was repeatedly punched in the face and head by a policeman has said they will sue on her behalf, local media report.
Footage posted on YouTube last week shows a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer straddling the woman and hitting her at least 11 times.
The CHP says they are investigating and have suspended the officer.
Her family said they would be filing a civil rights lawsuit on her behalf, according to local broadcaster KTLA.
Civil rights groups say they are set to meet police officials on Monday.

Police have said the woman was endangering herself and motorists walking on the shoulder of a busy highway in the west of Los Angeles.
A video of the incident was captured by passing motorist David Diaz, who told the Associated Press news agency the officer arrived as the woman was walking off the highway, but she turned around after the officer shouted something to her.
"He agitated the situation more than helped it," said Mr Diaz, who started filming soon after.

The officer involved in the incident has not been identified
But the officer is seen forcing her to the ground, briefly struggling with her before repeatedly punching her. A few moments later, a plainclothes officer enters the picture and helps his colleague put the woman in handcuffs.
The woman is being treated in hospital and undergoing psychiatric evaluation.

I say this with all due respect and do not mean anything personal, but that is the most stupid things I’ve heard.
Are you unfamiliar with the 10 freeway? Do you know what freeways are? How fast people drive?
If you want multiple deaths you let her walk on the freeway.

Yet your comment - a timely reminder - remains true, accurate, and valid.
It’s impossible to judge without a lot more information, and nobody is going to ask me to decide.
But, more and more, it seems like the police are unable to effective restrain people without using extremely violent force. Even the unarmed, even the elderly, even females, even in situations where they very much outnumber the suspect(s).
So, something is wrong: attitude, training, both?
All I know is that I would be very, very reluctant to call the cops for help in any circumstance. I’ve never felt that way before.
Then by all means, go out and beat the crap out of the woman to keep her from walking the median of the highway. Hope your police career goes well after that. You'll also enjoy being a political target of the race-baiting left as well.

It’s a microcosm of everything in life here today. You can’t feel good about calling the cops because of your reasoned belief that they have no intention of helping a situation or operating within the law. And you can’t tell your doctor what’s ailing you for fear that it will end up biting you on the a$$ in some government database or havint some agents show up to take your guns on some contrived charge that you are mentally unfit.
All we can hope for today is not needing either a cop or a doctor!

This is for the few psycho’s who came on the threads about this incident praising the cop for an exemplary job. Obviously he was not following police policy by viciously attacking an unarmed woman.
Read my post #29 and pay close attention to the word “psycho” That’s you. Just so you know.
