Costco removing D'Souza's 'America' from shelves

NEW YORK – The retail giant Costco Wholesale has issued an order to remove all copies of Dinesh D’Souza’s bestselling book, “America: Imagine the World Without Her,” from the shelves of its stores nationwide, WND has confirmed.

The book, in this midterm election year, is a strong rebuttal of the progressive ideology behind President Obama’s policies, which have been supported by Costco co-founder and director Jim Sinegal, a major Democrat donor and a speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention that nominated the president.

Costco has sold more than 3,600 copies of “America” nationwide, with about 700 copies sold last week as D’Souza’s film by the same name opened at more than 1,000 movie theaters nationwide.

But Costco’s book department issued the “pull-order,” requiring all Costco stores nationwide to remove the book, confirmed Scott Losse, an inventory control specialist in the book department

The Washington Examiner reported June 20 that the book sold 4,915 in the first week and 5,592 in the second week but mysteriously was kept off the New York Times bestseller list, where it would have ranked No. 8 and then No. 11 on the June 29 list.

The book will be on the Times July 13 list, however, at No. 17.

In total, Costco has given $100,000 to Obama and another $100,000 to Priorities USA, the pro-Obama super PAC.

Concerned individuals may contact Costco President and CEO W. Craig Jelinek by email or by calling (425) 313-8100 and/or Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President Richard A. Galanti by email or by calling (425) 313-8100.

More of the tolerance from the Liberals. If his beliefs were correct then he wouldn’t have a problem with an opposing view would he? More slime to consider.

This action is just one more piece of evidence that even the adherents of this demonstrably failed ideology don’t believe it can stand up to a book.

Very good point. I wonder if the decision to remove the book was decided in the board room or just by the whim of some buyer.

Dunno. It's at an astounding 70% discount at B&N, and so that's not good either.

I know people get all worked up about a book that "didn't make the NYTimes." Truth is, NO publisher knows what the Times' formula is. Certainly my "48 Liberal Lies" sold enough to get on the Times . . . but did it do so all at once? Probably not. My guess is that DD's book probably had a print run of 20,000-25,000, probably sold somewhere around 8,000-9,000 already, but has begun to tail off quickly as the movie campaign winds down. Mind you, those are good numbers, but they aren't Hillary's 60,000 (which was terrible based on her advance, but respectable for any other author).

Reminds me of the astronaut who buttonholed an author at a party, “I took your book into orbit, I couldn’t put it down!”

I don’t see any reason to go to costco vs Sam’s. They carry almost the same merchandise anyhow. I tend to prefer the items at Sam’s, other people are the other way around.

I had a membership to both for one year to try Costco. I bought one item online, went to Costco a total of three times in a year, then never renewed my membership there.

If it wasn’t already a foregone conclusion, this would be the tipping point for me to never go there again anyhow.

LOL. You heard the famous exchange between a British playwrite and Winston Churchill-—the playwrite sent Churchill two tickets to his play and said, “The play opens tomorrow night. Please come and bring a friend . . . if you have one.” Churchill responded, “Can’t make tomorrow. Will attend the next performance . . . if there is one.”

Obama butlicking Sinegal has lost sight of the big picture. D’Souza’s book is above the radar. He wont stop access and knowledge of it. People who want it will get it, and he looks like a censorer against a political view he doesn’t like, and will lose business. Fewer people will get excited about the removal of the book to come to Costco, than will stay away because of it’s removal.

That is true. Which begs the question "why did he do it"? It's not a good business decision after all. Was the guy threatened maybe? The NYT removed the book from its bestseller list..Why would they do that?

This book is being blacklisted for some reason...

wrote email today and they appear to be listening.

Here’s their reply:
Thank you for your e-mail to Costco Wholesale.

Costco is not influenced by political considerations in selecting product for sale in our warehouses or on Costco.com. This includes our selection of books. Our book buyers are solely interested in book sales, and do not favor any political persuasion over another. Recently, after deciding to sell the book “ America : Imagine the World Without Her”, beginning on June 1, a decision was made to pull the book from sale on July 1. This decision was based solely on the number of copies sold during that month, and had nothing to do with the content of the book.

Costco is not a book store. Our book shelf space is very limited. We exercise discipline in the best utilization of that limited space based solely on what our members are buying. We can’t carry every title that our members are interested in reading. We are constantly monitoring book sales, and make decisions to pull books off the shelves frequently based on sales volume to make room for other titles. Politics or controversy over content do not influence our decisions.

After we made the return, a documentary was released about the book. Since then there has been heightened interest by our membership base and brisk sales at locations still in stock. Therefore, we have made the decision to reorder the book

After we made the return, a documentary was released about the book. We caught a lot of s**t because our CEO is an Obama flack, and it was obvious that he felt someone was dissing the Holy Emperor. Since then there has been heightened interest by our membership base with threats to cancel in the thousands and brisk sales at locations still in stock. Therefore, we have made the decision to reorder the book...
