Sara Bareilles played softly through the surround-sound speakers of my husbands 2003 Mercedes Kompressor as I sat idling at a light. Id never been to this church before, but I could see it from where I was, across from an old park, abandoned in the chilly September air. The clouds hung low as I pulled the sleek, pewter machine into the lot. But I wasnt going to pray or attend services. I was picking up food stamps.
Even then, I couldnt quite believe it. This wasnt supposed to happen to people like me.

Once upon a time, one would sell the Mercedes long before picking up the food stamps...
I drive mine to Wal-Mart and Kroger.
Nothing new. My first job in the late 70’s was at a grocery store in a depressed area of town. The sparkling new Cadillacs of the food stamp spending customers were pretty common.
Its an 03... Its not like she’s rolling in there in an E series AMG BiTurbo..
Julia married Pajama Boy, had twins, and joined the Entitlement Army.
But a vote for Lizzie Warren in 2016 will give her “economic equality” !!
And at the end of the piece we learn it's purpose. FU, Darlena.
What a beauty!
The 03’ and others are a mechanical nightmare. People will give them to you to get rid of the problems.
Yes, she’s a hopeless case.
HuffPo hooker taking government handouts. Who woulda’ thunk?
You notice she still condescends to Christians though. Not so desperate to start doing the right thing!
Good looking Mercedes. I like that era.
No, it isn't. But unfortunately, it does. The economic "slowdown" brought a lot of families down.
But here's my question. If the author of this piece writes this well, why wasn't she doing freelance work? Not when the preemies were tiny, they needed her full-time then. But they grew.
It’s for sale. LOL
“Two weeks before my children were born, my future husband found himself staring at a pink slip.”
Marry before you make babies. <==Greatest Poverty Preventer EVER!
She thinks the supercharger (kompressor) badge is the model of the car?
What happened to Pink Cadillac?? More in tune with Obama..
He’s as squuuushy on the inside as he is in the middle..
I wanna be buried in a Red 500SL with the top off.
Barack the Magic Negro waved his wand and “allowed us to crawl our way out of the hole.”
You didn’t crawl anywhere. You climbed on the backs of working people and future generations and they carried you.
>>And at the end of the piece we learn it’s purpose. FU, Darlena.
I can’t agree more!
Baraq had a Chrysler 300 before he became POTUS.
I drive mine to Wal-Mart and Kroger.”
I drive my 89 560 convertible to Kroger and Sam’s Club. I tried to sell it last year but got no good offers. It is fun to drive on a nice open highway since the big V8 is a lot of engine for a small car.
No more emissions tests, so that is a good thing.
What state still hands out stamps anymore? I question this story.
Mine’s that five cylinder turbo-diesel.
I drive my Lincoln Town Car to work to pay for her food stamps...............
“Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends!”
I’m sure she had an EBT card. “Food stamps” is just a synonym these days.
They just bought the older girl a car for her 16th birthday but won’t tell us peasants what kind it is.
A healthy reaction. You ARE supposed to hate it. Hate it with every fiber of your being.
“Once upon a time, one would sell the Mercedes long before picking up the food stamps...”
In the article, she says many people gave her that advice, but her and her husband refused. Then they want us to be sympathetic?!?
Nope, sorry. I still have my job and I have never even dreamed of buying a Mercedes. I have no sympathy for limousine leeches.
Why sell it? Did you read the article?
“I drive mine to Wal-Mart and Kroger.”
And then you pay for your own food. And that’s the way it should be.
I saw that.
(I think the thread was pulled, I couldn’t fine my response to it. Admin Mod seems to be leery of snarking on Malaria and Sharia.)
It shouldn’t be too difficult to spot a 2014_____ in a caravan with 4 black Suburbans on the way to Sidwell Friends.
A 2003 Supercharged Benz could probably have been sold in 2008, and a used Civic purchased, with money left over.
A Supercharged Benz is expensive to maintain, and not nearly as reliable as a Honda Civic.
Plus, it drinks fuel.
But what I learned there will never leave me. We didnt deserve to be poor, any more than we deserved to be rich. Poverty is a circumstance, not a value judgment. I still have to remind myself sometimes that I was my harshest critic. That the judgment of the disadvantaged comes not just from conservative politicians and Internet trolls. It came from me, even as I was living it.No one deserves to be rich? She's a perfect Obamatron Socialist.
Lol,, I could see him in a Fiat.

This part really irks me:
“Once, a girl at the register actually stood up for me when an older mother of three saw the coupons and started chastising my purchase of root beer. They were buy two, get one free at a dollar a pop.
Surely, you dont need those, she said. WIC pays for juice for you people.
The girl, who couldnt have been more than 19, flashed her eyes up to my face and saw my grimace as I white-knuckled the counter in front of me, preparing my cold shoulder.
Who are you, the soda police? she asked loudly. Anyone bother you about the pound of candy youre buying?”
No, of course nobody bothers people about junk food they are buying with their own money! When you beg money from the rest of us, though, you had better be spending it on what you really need, and not luxuries. If you can afford to buy the luxuries, then you don’t need my money to do it.
Ahhh. I see. This story happened in 08. I was thinking she was tooling around to the Welfare Office in an 11 year old Mercedes.
Thanks for correcting me.
I hope they remember the Vanilla ice cream!!!
I loves muh rootbeer floats
It was WIC in 2008. That was probably still coupons.
WIC only went to EBT recently, and it still also uses paper vouchers, like checks, iirc.
WIC does require a nutrition risk analysis.
Something in me is calling BS.
OK, it was WIC in 2009 - they still might have been using the paper ‘checks’.
A blood test may have been given.
BUT - gag me with an effing spoon:
‘No one spoke to me, but they did stare. Mouths agape, the poverty-stricken mothers struggling with infant car seats, paperwork and their toddlers never took their eyes off me, the tall blond girl, walking with purpose on heels from her Mercedes to their grungy den.’ -
Did she make up this story just to be able to writs THAT bit of excrement?
And then you pay for your own food. And thats the way it should be.
I drove my Mercedes pickup truck, U1300L (with OM366A turbodiesel) several hundred miles last week to pick up some ham radio antenna sections at Kublos Surplus in Brackney, Pennsylvania.
Got a few other odds and ends, and returned to NH.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. People can “hope” that there will be a free lunch, but it’s not going to happen. Somebody pays. It’s the way of the world. The people who keep promising free lunches are thieves. Actually, they are worse than thieves. Everyone knows socialism doesn’t work, but socialist leaders keep popping up promising free stuff. And the nation slides into emptiness.
Travel to most ghettos and you will find more Mercedes and Caddies than you can imagine. They’re easy to recognize, they have those extra fancy wheels.
I’m not in the market and don’t have a place to keep it anyway.
My next used car if it ever happens will be a replacement 67 Cougar. A few years ago I had one that I bought from my uncle but wound up having to sell. I miss it some.
Wrong - “Food Stamps” is the SNAP card and can basically only be used on items with nutrition labels or produce.
The EBT Card is the welfare card and can be used for anything to include food items.
There’s a ton of both in use at both of the Food Lions I go to - and yes, most folks are driving better cars than my 2007 Ford Focus.
