I clean high school bathrooms, and my new $15/hour salary will change everything
Washington Post ^ | 7-7-14 | Raul Meza

Posted on 07/08/2014 2:56:14 PM PDT by dynachrome

Monday through Friday, my full-time job is cleaning restrooms at Van Nuys High School. But that work is not the hardest part of my life. The hardest part is saying goodbye to my 4-year-old son when he asks me not to go to work again. In order to make ends meet, I also work weekends and nights.

I know I’m lucky to have a full-time job as a facility attendant in the Los Angeles Unified School District. I’ve done that for 10 years, and some days are better than others, but I like the work, and my co-workers are a supportive second family. We don’t interact much with students, but those of us who do custodial work are eyes and ears for teachers and administrators. If I see a student needs help of any kind, I take pride in letting the right people know.

The one thing that hasn’t been good about the job is the pay. When I started 10 years ago, I made $8.65 per hour; now I make $9.85 per hour. But I just learned that’s going to change. SEIU Local 99, the union that represents me and more than 30,000 other school workers here, just negotiated a new contract that will raise my pay to $15 per hour by 2016.

hmmmm just how much should we pay a person who does nothing but clean bathrooms.

How much would she pay someone to clean her bathroom?

That $15/hour salary is certainly going to change things a lot, for the half or more of the workers who will find themselves out of work.

Uh, no.

The school just said “whatever” and passed the bill to the tax payers of the school district.

So you just picked the pockets of a bunch of working people so you can scrub toilets and clean up some kid’s puke for more than some people with college degrees are able to make.

Eventually you will run out of other people’s money and you will have more time to spend with your kid.

That zombie’s pathetic wages are a result of the fact that: a) The teachers union is sucking all of the oxygen out of the room in terms of compensation and b) the illegals that his/her union supports have driven the market value of his services even lower. There are lots of janitorial services that pay their employees better than this, do a better job, and don’t take dues out of their employees’ paychecks to boot.

Hell I don’t even know why I say this. I wonder if Raul will be as happy being laid off, because at $15.00 an hour his school district can only afford half as many janitors as before?

CC

P.S. I started out cleaning bathrooms, too. I , however was not satisfied in doing that for the rest of my life and have worked to acheive more. Perhaps Raul should consider that.

Yes it will change things, but not how he thinks.

It will change the amount of welfare he receives (it will go down), and it will change the cost of the things he buys, and if he's really unlucky he will experience REAL change.. the loss of his job.

In the end, he will be worse off than he was, mark my words.

Since the 2014 wage limit for Earned Income Credit for Raul appears to be 53 grand, I doubt he is paying ANY income tax at all and likely getting "free money" from Uncle Baraq.

So now instead of 20,000 a year with social services it will be 30,000 a year with reduced social services. Minus union dues and this person is SOL.

15 an hour from the SEIU? This is what killed America. Dem pol negotiates with SEIU and loots the treasury. Dues gets kicked back to election committee after the skim by union leadership. Workers get what they think is a good deal until it all goes bust and they are out of a job while the leaders vacation in Cabo.

I think the word for the SEIU is...parasite.

And you'll notice that Raul isn't being paid these bucks by a private-sector firm. No, it's a school district.

a fool and his money.

Huey Long demanded every government worker paid a portion of their income to his reelection campaign. IOW tribute aka union dues.

Any government employee who did not give the kickback, they were fired.

This 15 dollar an hour is a joke. It will be eaten by inflation and “user fees”.

First, I wish that the custodian quoted by the article would have commented about the financial effects of constitutionally indefensible Obamacare Democratcare on his salary, before and after his raise. Or are SEIU members one of the elite groups that have been exempted from Democratcare?

Otherwise, the important thing concerning this SEIU-negotiated raise is that it wasn't legislatively forced by the federal government. This is because the states have never delegated to Congress, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate intrastate labor.

So although the long-term effects of the raise on the school's budget were probably not well-planned or ignored, let's see what happens.

I love these sad stories. The Washington Post wants sad stories? Well, there’s about seven billion sad stories. And that’s not even counting the historical sad stories.
The market will figure out what your labor is worth. Any other way is discriminatory.
You want to make more money? Figure it out. Lots of people have. They just do it and don’t become a story in the Washington Post.
I can’t afford to pay out for every sad story a liberal encounters.

Dear FRiends,

By way of explanation I have an extremely limited education, borderline literacy, and possibly a more-than-questionable residency and citizenship status. My condition, generally, is such that the best job I can get is cleaning bathrooms.

Nevertheless I have decided, completely independently and with no help from outside sources, to pen somewhat of an editorial missive, or at best an autobiographical snippet, and submit it for pblication to The Washington Post. Albeit far from my personal domain and that of my colleagues, I know that the paper's editorial policies suit my writing style and general purpose in this particular matter, and that it may be an optimal medium for publication.

Upon publication, naturally, I shall enjoy a celebratory feast appropriate to my pastoral Latino upbringing and thence, perhaps, I shall steal a hubcap. Sincerely,

"Juan."

I am all for gainful work. I really am.

But if this guy is griping about the same job, at the same pay, at the same place for 10 years he has failed himself. If he had any pride in himself or any motivation he coule have made so much more for himself. After 10 years at any job if you aren’t happy about it and don’t like the pay leave. If after 10 years at the same place you are still an entry level employee I have no sympathy.

This guy has followed the liberal line that he is a victim of circumstance and his only hope is to give up his ambition and control to some jerk he’s never heard of to run his life.

I have always thought it the height of arrogance for an individual to emigrate to a foreign country and then not learn that countries language. If I moved to a foreign country I would do my best to learn their language. As I had discovered as a teenager in Europe in the 1980’s even if you don’t speak the local language well you get credit for trying.

The one good thing about working for a school district is that you can always promote to higher paying jobs by just taking the exams. Custodian I can go to Custodian II and on up to maintenance worker, landscaper, and painting.

I’ve seen people retire after being an Cafeteria Worker I for 30 years when there was plenty of tests for Cafeteria Worker II or cafeteria managers.
