Still, I wonder how it would have looked having la Raza or Fed riot squad bashing up an old guy in a wheel chair! Not really!
Very interesting! Just imagine if Mexico had retained all of those areas that were purchased. The entire areas would be as backward, corrupt and undeveloped as the Motherland. Plus imagine the border between those areas and the U.S. if it existed today. I suppose the Mississippi might have worked. This nation would not have survived!!!!
In the film, he first lays out the populist indictments against America, including those you stated. He then proceeds, using authoritative, non-celebrity, non-activist sources, to dismantle and rebut the indictments one-by-one.
So, to the claim that we took land from the native American tribes:
This indictment ignores the fact that the tribes lived under the Law of Conquest; warring and taking land from each other. How is it that they have any standing expecting another people from another place to treat them differently than they had been treating each other? Yet, we now do, and have for over a century.
America is not evil for instances in which we dealt with the tribes according to The Law of Conquest; America is good for NOT continuing to do so.
The land on which Mt. Rushmore sits is claimed by the Blackfoot. The U.S. Government has set aside funds for the original value of the land, PLUS interest, AND adjusted for inflation with which to pay the tribe for the land they no longer have. To this day the tribe refuses to accept the payment; choosing, instead, to wallow in sullen and self-righteous indignation, and brooding discontent.
Despite all of this, our native peoples are not living on the Earth as disgruntled, deported refugees in some foreign country; they live here still. They may not live on their ancestral land (granting their ancestors ever regarded any land as their own), but they have not been ousted from the country.
Also regarding "lost" land: there is the case of the nomadic tribes who never thought of the land as being owned, so it cannot now be considered to have been lost.
Now, as for the land in America that was once part of Mexico:
MEXICO -- NOT the U.S. -- chose to deal with issues in Texas and other southwestern regions according to The Law of Conquest. We met that challenge when we fought the Mexican American War, and the American Army captured Mexico City. In essence, we -- at that point -- "owned" 100% of Mexico.
NOW they're bitching because we settled the conflict NOT by killing every last one of them, but by a treaty in which:
We gave half of Mexico back to the Mexican Government?
AND paid for the half we kept?
AND assumed all of the debt that the Mexican Government owed to U.S. citizens?
REALLY?
America isn't evil because we kept (and paid for) a big chunk of what was once Mexico; America is good because we DIDN'T keep 100% of it.
Fantaatic
the mexicans lost a war. you lose territory in a war. the rest was paid for.
