Iraq warned the United Nations (UN) on Thursday that in capturing large portions of the country last month, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) also seized nuclear materials used in research at a university in Mosul, Iraq's second largest city.

Iraqi Ambassador to the UN Mohammed Ali Alhakim wrote in a letter to the UN, which was seen by Reuters, that roughly 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of uranium compounds were captured by the radical Jihadist group.

"These nuclear materials, despite the limited amounts mentioned, can enable terrorist groups, with the availability of the required expertise, to use it separately or in combination with other materials in its terrorist acts," said Alhakim.

Citing fears of a "dirty bomb" or "pocket nuke," in which nuclear materials are combined with conventional explosives, Alhakim asked for international aid to "stave off the threat of their use by terrorists in Iraq or abroad."

Unenriched uranium. They might make a bomb that could cause cancer 10 years later, but it’s no “sum of all fears” threat.

Put one of these in NY City, and watch people suddenly decide that they just can’t live in the city....even if not a single building was toppled or destroyed. They’d lose ten percent of their population within eighteen months. Who’d want to live around such a city at age twenty, when they know they might be dead by age forty from radioactive poisoning.

I was sharing a beer with a couple ex-SAS guys a few years ago at a club overlooking a New England harbor. I asked their opinion about the vulnerability of the harbor to hijacking an oil tanker or LPG tanker.

“No need”, one replied. “Just pack a Coke can with radioactive material and tape it to ten pounds of plastic explosive. Panic will take care of the rest.”

Now we have drones, cell-phone detonators, etc. The bad guys don’t need weapons-grade materials.

You are correct. Such a device is a fear-weapon. It does not do much damage beyond the explosion itself. But it will generate a lot of fear in a population that does Not understand radiation.

Do you think that there is no exposure to radiation in daily life? Grand Central Station is built of granite. There is more exposure there because of that. Bananas are radioactive. At about a pack a day of cigarettes, you get over 1 Rem per year of alpha radiation exposure.

In general, people are ignorant of this, and thus easily scared.

Good! Great! So, if they haven’t thought of it yet, send it to Iran ‘to become processed’, and then, they could create soda can bombs, that would do a little more, and be a little more dirty. The world would have a new definition of ‘watch the fireworks’.

Too bad the Coyote-in-Chief will be on his longest vacation to date in Martha's Vineyard.

He's worried sick over this.

Obammy likes to claim he "got" Osama even while the libs were saying that getting him didn't really matter, until we actually got him. Then it was all, "Obammy got Osama when Bush couldn't".

If the mooselimb radicals get a nuke under obammy's "watch", will the media care? Who will they blame?
