Officers say no ‘stand-down order’ for Benghazi
Associated Press ^ | Jul 11, 2014 6:11 AM EDT | Bradley Klapper and Donna Cassata

Posted on 07/11/2014 7:49:11 AM PDT by Olog-hai

Military officers testified that there was no “stand-down order” that held back military assets that could have saved the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans killed at a diplomatic outpost and CIA annex in Benghazi, Libya. Their testimony undercut the contention of Republican lawmakers.

The “stand-down” theory centers on a Special Operations team—a detachment leader, a medic, a communications expert and a weapons operator with his foot in a cast—that was stopped from flying from Tripoli to Benghazi after the attacks of Sept. 11-12, 2012, had ended. Instead, it was instructed to help protect and care for those being evacuated from Benghazi and from the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli. …

Does military discipline include following an order to tell less than the whole truth (or to lie) under oath?

Just wondering, not implying anything.

Funny, the story was that there were no assets nearby.
Turns out there were.
Then we were told the assets were told not to intervene.
So somebody is lying.
And I’d say it’s the guys testifying that there was no stand down order.

That is double talk testimony from Lt. Col. S.E. Gibson if AP quoted him correct. To paraphrase Lt. Col. S.E. Gibson’s testimony stating there was no stand down order but rather a remain in place order initiated. What is the difference between a stand down order and a remain in place order, Lt. Col. S.E. Gibson? Both orders require the same action or rather no action be taken which equals ‘stand down’

How would these low level officers and enlisted even know of the existence of a stand-down order? They were ordered to prepare to protect and care for the evacuees from Benghazi.

If someone was to interview them and ask “Were you aware of any stand-down order?” and they would truthfully say “No”. In which case the AP could report that they said there was no stand-down order, not “they were unaware of one” but there “wasn’t one”.

Isn’t the art of propaganda grand?

Not too long ago, I stated a similar sentiment on another thread and was told by a fellow FReeper that in no uncertain terms, the military swore an oath to follow the guidance of the civilian leadership, no questions asked.
I recalled that when I signed up, it was to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States...”, not some rogue administration.
You would have thought I’d tried to kick their dog....sheesh.

"It was not a stand-down order," he testified in March. "It was not, `Hey, time for everybody to go to bed.' It was, you know, `Don't go. Don't get on that plane. Remain in place.'"

This particular team perhaps among many others, was ready to launch and was told "don't go".
What was it Hillary said?

Well Klapper and Cassata can go and shove their opinion on
this. When a reporter walked in and found Stevens personal
appointment book because he was able to get to the scene
before our military got there tells me that not only was
a stand down order given but a stay away order also.

Maybe it wasn’t verbally stated “stand down” but something
amounting to it was given. They were told not to interfere
with the terrorist attack and the people who did and died
weren’t ordered to do so.

This is nothing but spin.

Of course there was no "stand down" order for troops outside of Libya. There has to be a CBA (Cross Border Authority) order given which is more like a "stand up" order. The fact that no rescue was sent is proof that no CBA was given.

Only the POTUS has the authority to issue a CBA!

0bama was notified immediately and automatically when the Benghazi consulate triggered the "Imminent Danger Notification System" alert. He did nothing.

They confirm everything Col. Hunt said about automatic notifications to the WH and add more details.

There are three scandals here...

---------------------------------------------------------

Denial of requests for security were a dereliction of duty. The lies and misdirection about the "video" after the attack were fraud and malfeasance under the color of authority. The inaction during the attack was something more than that.

The failure to act during the attack is the direct equivalent of desertion IMO.

ONE man had the authority to act that night.

ONE man deserted his post!

0bama abandoned his post. 0bama Is A Deserter!

0bama did nothing!!!

Tripoli rescue team told to stand down.

Hicks: Special Forces ‘Furious’ Upon Being Told to Stand Down video at link

"According to Benghazi whistleblower Gregory Hicks, the deputy chief of mission in Libya, special forces were “furious” when they were told to stand down during the Benghazi attack. “I will quote Lieutenant Colonel Gibson,” Hicks told the House Oversight Committee in hearings today, “He said, ‘This is the first time in my career that a diplomat has more balls than somebody in the military.’”"

This might be considered a stand down too.

Whistle-blower: Botched talking points hurt FBI probe of Benghazi attack

"Another whistle-blower questioned Wednesday why more military assets were not deployed sooner during the Benghazi terror attack. Mark Thompson, a former Marine and official with the State Department's Counterterrorism Bureau, said he was rebuffed by the White House when he asked for a specialized team -- known as a FEST team -- to be deployed. This is a unit made of special operations personnel, diplomatic security, intelligence and other officers."

BENGAZI - Why Wasn't FEST Activated?

Here is a third way a "stand down" policy was implemented IMO.

Blow-by-Blow: How Obama & Hillary Left Americans to Die

"Nordstrom further testified in writing that Hillary Clinton waived security requirements for the Benghazi consulate despite high and critical threat levels in the six categories of security standards established under the Overseas Security Policy Board and the Secure Embassy Construction and Counterterrorism Act of 1999. The waiver can only be authorized by the Secretary of State, who cannot delegate that responsibility to someone else. ”If the Secretary of State did not waive these requirements, who did so by ordering occupancy of the facilities in Benghazi and Tripoli?” Nordstrom wrote."

Isn’t this like focusing on the behavior of ants under the decision makers’ feet?

Four people wouldn’t have been enough to defend the Benghazi location.

So these 4 were told to remain in place / stand down and maybe they wouldn’t have been much help.

Why were there no planes sent from wherever we were in the Mediterranean area? Even if they hadn’t been able to do anything, why weren’t they scrambled? The fight went on all night.

“The senior military officer who issued the instruction to “remain in place” and the detachment leader who received it said it was the right decision and has been widely mischaracterized. The order was to remain in Tripoli and protect some three dozen embassy personnel rather than fly to Benghazi some 600 miles away after all Americans there would have been evacuated. And the medic is credited with saving the life of an evacuee from the attacks.”

This is all Clintonian wordplay and misdirection. I presume the US military has air, ground, and sea Special Forces teams positioned near hot spots and ready for emergency combat operations, especially on anniversaries of 9-11. The four trainers in Tripoli were brave men who wanted to help because the command structure wasn’t. They are irrelevant to any stand down order that actually matters here. The Obama administration waited until the attacks were over, so that it was too late to do anything. I have to wonder if the administration was taken by surprise by the second attack only.

Here are questions the “investigation” and reporters are hiding while they debate “stand down” orders:
1) WAS THERE A “STAND UP” ORDER?
2) WHO GAVE IT?
3) IF NOT, WHY?
4) WERE THERE PRE-ESTABLISHED ORDERS FOR RESPONSE TO THIS SORT OF INCIDENT?
5) WHAT WERE THEY?
6) WERE THEY FOLLOWED?
7) IF NOT, WHY?

I am fed up with incompetent “investigators” and spin-doctors.

What utter bull crap! Glen Doherty ignored that order, chartered a private plane on his own and arrived at the CIA complex just as Ty Woods and his team got back to it from their unapproved mission to save personnel at the consulate compound. Just as the jihadis began their attack on the CIA complex. He had time to fight alongside Ty Woods and others for several hours before the two of them were killed.

Astute observation. Of course I feel that Gowdy and the Select Committee has been set up to fail from the beginning. Boehner is just pandering to conservatives trying to show that he is doing "something" about Benghazi. I believe Gowdy knows this and he is just being the "good soldier" for the cause.

Actually 0bama deserted 39 people in Benghazi and left them to die. In August 2013, CNN reported that a source said there were 35 survivors of the attack. Thanks to the bravery of Ty Woods, Glen Doherty and some others only four were killed.

4 dead plus 35 survivors makes 39 left to die.

Thank you. I just searched back through several pages of FR’s keyword ‘benghazi’ The one subject that is noticeably absent are stories about the survivors. I know for a fact that I could search that archive all the way back to the day of the attack and not find more than a handful of articles about them. The coverup of Benghazi is monumental. Pray that Trey Gowdy cracks it wide open.

First off, there is no such ting as a “stand down order”.

Second, there is ONLY a cross border authority order, and only the President can give it. Without such as order the troops must continue to stand down.

Obama never gave the CBA.

I am of another opinion on the Select Committee. While it may have been set up to fail, I doubt Gowdy will be a good little solider. He is a prosecutor's prosecutor and no one's fool.

The WH fears him because of his skill and reputation. What happened in Benghazi will be revealed much to the dismay of the WH. There is no other option for the WH but to present the "truth" for idiot consumption before Gowdy.

This article is about 1 Special Operations Team

-a detachment leader
-a medic
-a communications expert
-a weapons operator with his foot in a cast (My first thought is there is no backup for a weapons operator with his foot in a cast? )

"..Transcripts of hours of closed-door interviews with nine military leaders by the House Armed Services and Oversight and Government Reform committees were made public for the first time on Wednesday...."

While the transcripts have just been made public, this part of the testimony was leaked long ago. A rehash of what has already been claimed.

I hope there is more context to the following quote, because if there is not, Rear Adm. Brian Losey sounds like a POS. If I have misunderstood this quote, I offer my sincere apologies.

"...He said assigning the small team to defend a perimeter wouldn't have been appropriate and would have meant the military's losing its command operation in Tripoli "for the benefit of four riflemen who weren't even riflemen."

This testimony only concerns these 4 soldiers. It has no bearing on the FEST team, air support assets in Italy or the Marine unit which all could have provided support. Not ordering them to go is the same as ordering them to stand down.

The meme that "No one could have got there in time" is also BS. No one had any idea how long the attacks would last, they could have gone on for days. Fighters from Italy could have provided support during the second attack and possibly ended it.
