Arecibo, Puerto Rico (CBS TAMPA) – A succinct blip of radio waves detected from far beyond the Milky Way Galaxy amid deep space has left scientists saying they “really have no handle on” the mysterious “fast radio burst.” The split-second burst of radio waves discovered through the Arecibo radio telescope has given scientists new evidence of the rare, mysterious pulses emanating from deep outer space – well beyond the ends of the galaxy. How can they tell that the radio bursts are originating outside the galaxy? The direction, maybe?
The article mentions that the burst were discovered by the radio telescope at Arecibo. I was there a few years ago, and I recommend the trip to anyone going to PR. It takes a bit winding through West Virginia like back roads up and down ridges and through small hollows to get there, but it is worth it. The scale of the telescope is so breathtakingly immense that it is not properly conveyed in film or on television. And even though it is no longer on the cutting edge of radio astronomy, it just feels as if it would be the first place to make contact.
Yes. The Arecibo dish is extremely directional, so it must be aimed precisely at what you want to observe (through a combination of moving the feedpoint and waiting until the earth rotates it to the desired orientation).

if its radio waves from outside the galaxy it has to be of crazy old origin, it would take that long, maybe billions of years, for something to get here at the speed of radio. even if it was FM, not AM
It was fun, mobile gear was cheap and your FCC license was free, but for a stamp! Har, in a way, this is kind of a modern equivalent in its own way...

This is at least the fourth time this particular magazine cover (with the Flying Saucer) has been posted today, all for different stories. Was this image featured in a recent movie or cable show?
The Arecibo radio telescope in Porto Rico and the Parkes radio telescope in Australia are situated such that they aren't able to point in the same direction at the same time. Arecibo is (18° 20' 33" N) above the equator and (66° 44' 57" W) of the prime meridian. Parks is (32° 59' 43" S) below the equator and (148° 16' 4.4" E) of the prime meridian.
