"Who lost Slavyansk?" has become the question on the lips of every proponent of the revanchist project to establish and expand "Novorossiya," the once Russian-conquered lands of the Black Sea region, of which east and southeast Ukraine are crucial constituents. Accusations of betrayal and cowardice leveled against the separatists have been met by counter-accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin egged on a movement he did not sufficiently support militarily and now seeks to abandon. But the merry-go-round of recriminations is exposing interesting disclosures and hypotheses for what the Kremlin is now playing at in eastern Ukraine.
Most of the furor and speculation centers on the heavily scrutinized figure of Col. Igor Strelkov. Strelkov, whose real name is Igor Girkin, is a Russian national and the self-styled "defense minister" of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), a position that entailed leading the rebel troops in operations across eastern Ukraine. Many suspect that Strelkov, who was born in Moscow, is an active or reserve officer in the GRU, Russia's military intelligence agency. (The European Union sanctioned the colonel in April on charges he worked for the GRU.) He's said to have fought in Serbia, Chechnya, and Transnistria. Documents recently discovered by reporters at the abandoned separatist headquarters in Slavyansk indicate that Strelkov had also presided over a system of Stalin-like summary justice.
Over the past few months, reactionary Russians lionized Strelkov as a stalwart enemy of the "fascist junta" in Kiev and the ringleader of the separatist cause. A popular online meme had him fronting a Photoshopped version of the movie poster for 300, the adaptation of the pulp comic book about Sparta's small but formidable defense against the conquering Persian army. ....But how quickly Greek heroes transform into treacherous wimps.

hey, Putin lovers. I hope you see this thread and realize your mistake. You accused the Ukrainian government of being led by fascism. Clearly it’s the pro-Russian scum who are the fascists. How’s that crow taste?
All is not well in Kiev, either.
New tires have appeared on the Maidan, despite threats from the government to clear it.
You should read this, as well:
Statement by Evgeniy Muraev, MP of Ukraine State Rada -June 17, 2014
During a televised debate, apparently. this guy is “party of Regions”?
This is a remarkably good read. If there weren’t lives at stake, it would be funny.
Why won’t he let the other guy speak? Typical.
LOL. I imagine they are laying low. I wonder how the love affair between Putin and Crimea is coming along.
I'm still chuckling about Russia Today posting from a UFO-conspiracy website.
Well, the Borscht Brigade is in a tough spot. They went all-in (as the Russian propaganda media instructed them), and now it looks as if the Russian propaganda media is backing off, just like Putin appears to be.
Russia's Armchair Warrior Turns on Ukraine's Rebel Leader - July 9, 2014 - "....Kurginyan, at one point in the video, also lashes out at armchair loudmouths who dispute his version of events in Ukraine. As it happens, Kurginyan delivers this message from a couch, seated alongside two automatic rifles, looking very much the poster child of armchair analysis."
I think this moaning about slavyansk is part of possible
snowjob being laid on us.. They retreated when it appeared
they didn’t have to. It is part of suckering in Ukraines
forces, while many of reports of troops on russian side
north by Kharkiv, shows that maybe with Ukraine forces,
which are very, very, small, compared to russia, tied down
by the nutcakes in Donbass, and russia could invade in the
north by Kharkiv, and bag the whole country.
I really think tha putin and his people figure that they
will have most of Ukraine, west of Kyiv even, physically,
and that the Crimea and especially the Donbass diversions
has got Ukraine and the world off balance and looking the
wrong way, with forces and resources tied up in the wrong
place, and ripe for instant takeover by russia
that they cant stop. The ATO forces in Donbas will
be flanked.Russia figures this will work as it
appears US,EU, Hato, UN wont care enough to help...Ed
Read up on Alexander Dugan. Both sides have a lot of fascism.
Actually, no, not both sides. Most Americans are too stupid to realize that much of what is called “fascist” in Ukraine isn’t fascist at all.
The author makes it quite apparent nobody really knows how this will ultimately play out when the dust finally settles. He spent a lot of time describing “he said, she said” statements and weaving them together.
All sides have their spokesmen who say “they” have the real story. But it is after all just that...”a story”...and one which any can weave however they might like, especially with all the sordid factions in the Ukraine park as well as thier “political stances”.
We can at best speculate how this will end. You really can do no more than this for the propaganda machines are still rolling.
However, Putin doesn’t seem to be much engaged at this point.....I do believe he’s waiting it out to see what crap rises to the surface next.
I can buy that as a possibility Hubel......I believe Putin understands how the people “work” at war among themselves better than Nato or the US. I also think he knows their ploys to sidetrack and or fool one another. He should...he’s played enough of them himself!
Therefore i think Putin will wait until they’ve played themselves out.....he knows he can go in at any time of his choosing if he determines to do so. Obviously he’s not chosen so thus far.....he IS however playing some cards along the way when it’s to his advantage to do so. Otherwise he’s letting the game play itself out. He’s still got the Aces in his hand IMO.
So the right Sector is not fascist? Interesting.
“So the right Sector is not fascist? Interesting.”
Nope. They are ultranationalists. They believe every Ukrainian citizen should be able to own firearms and want a national citizen army like Switzerland. That’s not how fascists generally think. Fascism is a particular political-cultural philosophy that requires a dictator, or dictatorship assembly, essentially a merger of government and business, etc. Right Sector apparently doesn’t push for any of that.
