The Republican Senatorial primary in Mississippi exhibited an over-the-top abuse of power, showing how the accumulation of one party political power corrupts the entire system.
Upon the death of Mark Mayfield, an attorney who had been arrested and charged with felony conspiracy for supposedly telling blogger Clayton Kelly how to access Rose Cochran’s room in a nursing home, I began to look into how that ridiculous incident had gotten so out-of-hand. During the primary, I watched as Bradley Dayspring, communications frat-boy of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), made such a big deal about the arrest of the men that investigators had linked to the photo of Rose Cochran.
It is typical of the NRSC to hammer distracting details of supposed scandals of the opponents of their incumbency protection racket, rather than allow a debate between the establishment Senators they back, and any challengers. So, I treated the arrest of these so-called conspirators as a distraction during the campaign, and didn’t pay much attention to what the phony frat-boy was tweeting at the time.
The death of Mark Mayfield changed all that.

My take is that an innocent man Mark Mayfield is dead because of the hardball corruption in Mississippi. I have read that Mark's widow is severely emotionally distraught to this day. My heart goes out to her and her family. I pray justice will be served for her and her family and all of us to whom the Rule of Law is a sacred tenet.

and good ol’ boy Thad is in the middle of it.....How the Hell would he know? He’s so dysfunctional he could’nt get off an elevator at the right place.
I am not sure he killed himself, and I am not sure he didn’t. He doesn’t seem to be the sort of man that would do a thing like that in the manner reported. It was reported that there was a suicide note. But the Ridgefield PD is supposed to investigate.
I will wait until the results of the police investigation are complete.
For sure though, the neighboring Madison PD seems to be a rogue outfit.
I’m astounded that Thad Cochran’s family would let someone with such a long career be forever sullied and despised by conservatives. He could’ve gone down in the history books as a highly regarded politician who served his state and his nation and knew when it was time to retire. Instead, he’ll forever be the poster boy for how disgusting the ptb RINOs have become. It could even be the point at which the Republican Party ceases to function....these disgusting tactics represent the point of no return.
Cochran and the Barbour gang are joined at the hip. When some says ‘Cochran’ was involved, it means the whole ring of corruption that uses the name ‘Cochran’ as its brand.
Just reinforces the notion that there is no real difference between the republican or democrat party. They are all the permanent criminal class that is above the laws you and I have to deal with.

I had thought all this devious double-dealing had died with the exposure of “the culture of corruption” that had been identified by former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Apparently not. There is still a deep streak of corrupt practices within the GOP establishment, and almost always, it relates back in some way to the influence and interaction with the Democrat party and the liberalism that pervades that unspoken alliance.
Attempts to cleanse the Republican party from within are met with some of the most vicious, base, and unrelenting sort of attacks that would ordinarily be reserved for countering the imprecations delivered by the Democrat party operatives. The rule of law and polite exchange of opinions are far removed from this kind of no-holds-barred kind of alley knife fight.
If there is going to be dirty fighting, get it out in the open. The rest of us will be given room to step back and away.
Usually they expose this stuff with relish.
Now it makes me wonder if they haven't been using this info to keep him in line.

Mark Mayfield was a close family friend. My family still lives in Jackson, where I grew up. When I've spoken to my parents recently they've said Jackson is a powder keg right now.
While they both voted for McDaniel, many of their upperclass Northeast Jackson & Madison friends did not. It's obvious why--their only syllogization for voting for Thad was his legacy; and by legacy, I mean years occupying a seat in the Senate; not actually accomplishing anything in the way of progress for our infamously superlative state. That and the #RebelsForThad hashtag trending on Twitter. Actually, no -- the hashtag was clearly the dominant persuading factor.
My dad shares Mr. Mayfield's deep commitment to the Tea Party ideology, particularly economic & immigration reform. He told me many times before Mr. Mayfield's death how much he respected the work he was doing. He noted how brave he was & how much conviction he must have to oppose an institution so deeply ingrained in Mississippi & Jackson society. My dad told me on many occasions there's nothing those corrupt, establishment good ole' boys wouldn't do to protect their money.
This incident reminded me of another from when I was younger. My parents were also acquaintances with Dickie Scruggs--one of the richest men in Mississippi who was just released from prison after being convicted of bribing a judge with $40K for a favorable ruling in a minor fee dispute.
Again, like my dad has always said--you never know someone until you come between them & their money.
The Tea Party in Mississippi (and nationally) is destabilizing the establishment's long-standing racquet. We are exposing the corruption that has gone on for years & in-so doing, disturbing their honey pot.
Mark Mayfield was so committed to the ideals for which the Tea Party stands because he SO sincerely believed they would improve the state of things for everyone in our state & in our country. He was the lease extreme, political man you could imagine. Instead, he was enormously kind, humble... he was, as Jen described, a true Southern Gentleman. In combination with being a truly good man, he also happened to be one with tremendous strength of conviction. His conviction compelled him to take action where many of us fall short, lacking strength to fight this evil system.
I cannot imagine how they must have tortured him to push him to this. He loved his family SO much, as much as any man I know. He was very close with his two sons & also very active in his church. They must have bullied him relentlessly; they must have been so cruel & deliberate, to push him to this.
Mr. Mayfield's death has shaken up so many of us. I've vacillated between a range of emotions from enormous grief, as the loss of a great man & friend; terror, at the prospect that this is what happens when the most courageous among us stand up to this system; anger, at the depraved men, including Brad Dayspring who have blood on their hands and are surely going to the hell they proclaim to fear so much for the sick pleasure they took in leading this witch hunt.
I'm trying to get beyond feeling vindictive: no other family should have to suffer like the Mayfields, as a results of the dangerous game of politics. However, this corrupt institution needs to be completely uprooted.
I can't imagine it getting any uglier than this; but I fear it will. We all need to band together & be strong. As Mr. Mayfield's sons posted following his death, "We will persevere and stay the course." In his honor, we will prevail.

Thank you for this important article Jen. Exposing this kind of corruption and cronyism is critical. And it is not just in good ol' boy Mississippi courts, police, businesses, prosecutors offices. It extends to D.C. and the GOP and its NRSC arm ... specifically the likes of the utterly disgusting and contemptible Brad Dayspring. From one of his own tweets that you listed ....

A true shame this small repulsive boy didn't take his own advice. Mark Mayfield may still be with us. Dayspring has blood on his hands.

A mass exodus from the GOP is warranted. This is dirty politics which is NOT going to be changed unless they are trounced in a humiliating way. I hope this gets read by EVERY republican voter. Every republican voter who has a conscience left really need to stop supporting the GOP-e now.
Of course, from that primary date on, the Mississippi Republican machine, arm in arm with the national one, went even further than framing an innocent man, and framed the entire tea party movement as racist.
