Friends and family remember Isiah Haggins Jr. (16-year old killed while robbing store)

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Family and friends gathered outside of a Dayton shopping plaza to remember a teen shot in an apparent robbery attempt.

Isiah Haggins Jr., 16, was shot multiple times by the owner of the Step-N-Style clothing store in the Northwest Shopping Plaza on West Siebenthaler Avenue on June 30. Police said Haggins, along with another suspect, walked into the store armed with guns in a reported robbery attempt.

Since Haggins’ death was declared a homicide, the Sisters of the Precious Blood held a vigil for him Saturday afternoon.

People gathered Saturday outside of the store to pray for Haggins and his family; his mother says the loss is tough.

“He was a young child that made a bad decision that cost him his life, But he was only 16. I’m pretty sure we’ve all done something that could cost us our lives at the age of 16. He was not a bad kid. He was just a child trying to be a teenage,” said Haggins’ mother Candace Talbott.

Police said the Step-N-Style owner was acting self defensive when he shot Haggins Junior; another suspect remains on the loose following the attempted robbery at the urban clothing store.

Talbott recognizes that her son’s actions were wrong but his death is not something she can let go.

“Do not let this just fly away as if it was just a murder that may have been justified. My son was shot four times. A 16-year-old kid was shot four times.”

Talbott says her son simply fell in with the wrong crowd.

Her family agrees noting that they had a feeling some of the guys he hung around were up to no good.

Now as they remember their loved, they urge all parents to trust your instincts and save your children from what happened in this case.

“And I want every parent to understand, you can say it, because I’ve said it before, ‘not my kid, my child would never do anything like that’ You can say it all day but once that child walks outside your door, you’re no longer around him, you do not known what that child will do,” said one attendee of the vigil.

The second suspect who was with Haggins Jr. fled and is still on the loose.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the store and the shopping plaza as part of their investigation.

I want to know what is up with the category of “homicide”?

Is that still valid? Did they change it?

And what is with Catholics lately getting so liberal that nuns are publicly out there supporting a thug?

Who was the corrupt DA (or whomever) that declared this death a “homicide”, I’d like to know?

Technically speaking, it was a homicide. Anytime someone kills another, it's homicide. Homicide has many categories; accidental, negligent, and in this case, justifiable. Homicide does not necessarily mean "murder" which this certainly does not appear to be.

When they catch this guy and charge him with murder we will get to hear how he too fell in with the wrong crowd.

This in a nutshell, which is where it belongs, is the Blackamoor mentality summed up. It's not our fault if there are bad consequences to our actions. Thugging don't mean nothing. Just YMB’s (young black men) being boys. The entire culture of non-responsibility is summed up in these stupid banalities.

The thug's mom is just as big a problem as the thug. She's the one who instilled these values into him.

Where was the Baby Daddy in this kid’s life, Momma Genius?

You obviously did a great job alone raising a typical 16 year old.

“Since Haggins’ death was declared a homicide,...”

Homocide by whom? The store owner who was defending himself and his store? Is he going to be charged?

“Homicide” is legalese for death by other than natural causes. The police called it “self defense” so I would think it falls under the category of justifiable homicide.

There’s no doubt it was a homicide. In this case it was a JUSTIFIED homicide.

Nice parenting ms. Talbott. Don’t take responsibility for any of your actions....illegitimate kid, lack of discipline etc. And how about the sperm donor? What has he got to say about this?

That’s fair, but I thought it a bad thing that the media is playing it up especially by omitting the word “justifiable”.

Homicide does not necessarily mean "murder" which this certainly does not appear to be.

In this case it would be for the other perp involved.

“He was a young child that made a bad decision that cost him his life,”

Yep. So was Charles Starkweather & Carol Fugate. The world would have been better off if someone had put four bullets in each of them early on. Then like Isiah Haggins Jr, no innocents would have been killed.

I see it everyday in many different social and ethnic groups. The children are free to roam as they please. I suppose these parents think that Hillary’s ‘village’ will take care of their discipline and training. It a sickening.

Take them with you. They need your good input. Make them help mow the lawn, fix the car, take them fishing and hunting. Teach them how to throw a ball. Know where they go and who they go with.

It was a Homicide. But it was a lawful homicide. all homicide means is the killing of a human. whether it is lawful or unlawful is another issue.

Oh, she knows that she is the mama...it's the daddy she's not sure of.
