We are moving the Minnesota Senate race from Safe Democrat to Democrat Favored, but readers should not make too much of the changed rating.
The change reflects the broad national environment and Minnesotas generally competitive nature. A national anti-President Barack Obama wave certainly could threaten incumbent Democratic Sen. Al Franken, and Frankens 2008 victory in a good political environment for Democrats was razor-close.
The new rating says little about Republican challenger Mike McFaddens candidacy, other than the fact that the wealthy businessman appears to have considerable personal resources that he can sink into the race if he wishes.
McFadden continues to run cutesy videos (and now a TV ad) that focus on his coaching to introduce himself to voters, while Franken raises money and generally acts as if he has no opponent. Instead, the freshman Democrat has run TV spots focusing on issues and his performance in D.C.
Franken showed $5 million in the bank at the end of June, while McFadden had about $2 million. But the Republican had not put in personal money at that point.
Polling in the race is spotty and not particularly helpful for McFadden. Franken almost certainly starts with a very comfortable lead.
At this point, I see little reason to believe that McFadden will beat Franken and Im skeptical about the prediction made by anonymous observers in a July 7 Roll Call piece that the contest is likely to be a 2-point race by Labor Day. (The race will close, of course, as McFadden spends money.)

Where the heck are all those “values” voters who live in Minnesota? Stop letting the unions and liberals in Minneapolis take your state down the drain!
Why is this is a safe Democrat seat?
This article appeared in today’s (red) Star Tribine:
“Franken campaign ads seek to reintroduce him to voters”
Usually, a campaign resorts to the “reintroduction” ploy when it’s not getting any traction. Franken is not well-liked or respected by the voters. He is vulnerable.
MEMO TO FRANKEN VOTERS As far back as 2008, at the presidential debate in Nashville, Democrat candidate Obama advanced his signature plan that was ultimately enacted (by an historic straight Democrat party-line vote) into the "Affordable Care Act :
OBAMA: "No. 1, let me just repeat, if youve got a health care plan that you like, you can keep it. All Im going to do is help you to lower the premiums on it. Youll still have choice of doctor.
Repeated over and over ---- with the promise that every American would be saving $2500.00 on healthcare costs.
Every Democrat enthusiastically chimes in, echoing the same false promises----lock-stepping party loyalty not seen since 1940's-era Europe.
Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn): "people who are happy with their current plan, wouldn't need to change it."
FRANKEN YOUTUBE SOUND BITE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCZmAYYNz8Ihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCZmAYYNz8I
Piss on that state!
hey, go piss on the major cities..
Leave me alone.
I am but one vote.
Plus, what little I have found is Mike is a Rino. Of course he is gonna loose.
remember when Repubs won 49 states???? Minnesota was the 50th and too damned stupid to wake up to reality....pathetic.
In Minnesota’s defense it was mondales home state and when they ran him in Wellstones place after he died he lost.
REPEAL THE 17TH ASAP!
Repeal of the 17th in MN would assure Franken’s reelection by the Democrat legislature.
The State legislatures should be allowed to send whoever they want, just like the Founders intended.
If Minnesota wants to send a fool , that should be their right.
Direct election of Senators by the people perverts the Republic.
I don’t want politicians choosing my Senators. It’s bad enough the garbage that passes for my legislators. Such a Senate would be made up entirely of Communist rodents and weasel leftist RINOs on par with Cochran/Graham/Collins, etc. There’d never be another Conservative again to serve in that body.
