New York to offer free lunch to all middle-school students

New York's $75 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that began last week includes the first step toward offering free lunch for all 1.1 million students, expanding a program now reserved only for the city's poorest children.

Starting in September, the city will spend an additional $6.25 million a year so that all 177,000 students in the sixth through eighth grades will qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

By expanding the program, advocates seek to eliminate the shame and embarrassment that keep many children who qualify for the free lunches from receiving them.

As I recall, the USSR provided their citizens a "free lunch".

I guess there aren’t any parents anymore. (Can only wonder where all the kids came from? Maybe they’re the result of Obama’s big kidnapping program on our southern border?)

Send all the Illegals up to New York. That’ll cut down on some of the expense of keeping them til they are old enough to vote Democrat and get more ‘Free Stuff”.

I got a “free lunch” in grade school after I washed trays, dishes, silverware, pots & pans and grills for an hour each day.

Won’t the middle school students feel shame if the teachers have to pay for their lunches while the students dine free? NY had better give the teachers free lunches also. After all, it’s all free. /sarc

“Free lunch”

What if someone brings their own?

In the higher grades the kids can just leave and eat at Chik-fil-A right??

That my friends is not a free lunch, if my math is correct that is $17.65 per meal! Procurement, distribution, preparation and serving... All for just $18 per tray. Follow the money, see who benefits. (Is it the “clilren!)

New York taxpayers forced to offer free lunch to all middle-school students at the point of a gun

Fixed.

Once and for all: There SHOULD be shame and embarrassment associated with accepting free s**t from the government.

I guess that’s more welfare money their parents can spend on booze and drugs and other stuff.

Are these free lunches from Michelle’s list of approved foods?

NY taxpayers should consider filing suit against the waste of their hard earned dollars.

But, on the bright side, NY will need to buy another barge to haul the waste to a brand new landfill somewhere down south. Anyone remember that wandering barge years back?

This will help unemployment, and boost our economy. /S

It's that for 180 days of meals ($35.31 per student for the year, or 9.8¢ per meal). The only way that math works is if nearly every student is already getting a taxpayer paid (no such thing as a free) lunch and they're just adding a few thousand new students. For example, if it is 10,000 new students (with 167,000 already on the dole) then the price would be $1.73 per meal.

Any idea on what the current unsubsidized price for a NYC school lunch is?

I stand corrected and thanks for not flaming a math major who cannot read or a English major who can’t add. Whichever one works will do.. I guess that’s why they threw me outta the supermarket Express lane with 19 items.

Every day the kooky Bill de Blasio, and his legion of fawning media, give anyone with a functioning brain another reason to get the hell out of New York.

You’ve been warned!
