I saw that and wondered why, same as you. Maybe they meant Non-commissioned officers quarters and got it wrong?
I think he should be in the barracks where all his ‘buddies’ can let him know what they think of deserters.

I don’t expect fragging or anything like that.

I kinda disagree. I do forsee a fragging in his future. Real US soldiers can't stand a deserter.
