NAACP lays out five point plan to reduce gun violence

Grown-up time means Jim Vincent, president of the Rhode Island NAACP, calling a news conference on the steps of the Garrahy Judicial Complex in response to a drive-by shooting in Chad Brown late Tuesday night in which five people were injured. The NAACP, in consultation with other neighborhood groups, issued a “Call to Action,” demanding that Providence Mayor Angel Taveras call a leadership conference to discuss solutions to a problem that is putting families and children at risk.

In addition to the leadership conference the NAACP also called upon Governor Chafee to direct the Governor’s Workforce Board “to establish targeted workforce development programs” in neighborhoods with high unemployment.

Vincent also wants Mayor Taveras to “evaluate the Providence Recreation Department to determine its effectiveness in providing recreation and youth development services to increase its relevancy.”

Vincent also wants 15% of the Google settlement money. This would provide about $30 million “to support youth development and ex-offender training and employment programming,” a real investment in our communities.

Lastly, the NAACP wants the Public Safety Commission to “establish a community liaison to connect high crime neighborhoods with the police department to help prevent wars and provide mediation support.”

The government to the rescue to stop "gun violence" in Providence, Rhode Island. Sigh - if we only had more government programs to stop violence (sarcasm). More government, more conferences, more money, more talk. They must use the same playbook as Chicago! Better call in the National Guard.

And if you look at the pictures at the bottom, Michael Bloomberg's Everytown for Gun Safety was there reassuring us that the government can protect us from violent criminals.

Of course, none of the proposed solutions deals directly with disarming criminals or provides any practical means of self-defense. Most of those people will never understand why things never change while they continue waiting for someone else to solve the problem of violence for them. That is what really makes me feel sad for those folks.

Exactly. Women, marry the men before you have sex with them.

That would solve 90% of the “gun violence” problems.

WE need a `Call to Action,’ some kind of federal program!

We’re always reading here about Chicago shootings: `25 shot, one killed; 34 shot, 2 dead.’
I’m thinking some range time for inner city, licensed gun owners might be a good idea.
Free ammo, coaching, targets, etc. Feel me?

[Rhode Island NAACP president] Vincent also wants 15% of the Google settlement money. This would provide about $30 million

"How did you meet the Kingfish, Mr. Brown?"

"Well, one day at the carnival, I reached into my pocket to get my wallet, and shook hands with the Kingfish."

The NAACP, anti-gun violence program has no gun control elements? Wow, this is progress! (possibly a waste of money but at least not a Bloomberg knee jerk reaction.

(1) establish targeted workforce development programs” in neighborhoods with high unemployment.

(2)evaluate the Providence Recreation Department to determine its effectiveness in providing recreation and youth development services to increase its relevancy.”

(3) provide about $30 million “to support youth development and ex-offender training and employment programming,” a real investment in our communities.

(4) Lastly, the NAACP wants the Public Safety Commission to “establish a community liaison to connect high crime neighborhoods with the police department to help prevent wars and provide mediation support.”

The first point should be to shut down racebaiting groups who are out there stirring the race pot all of the time to keep the big bucks coming in.

1. Mother and fathers stay together
2. Thug music / culture eliminated
3. Less drugs, more hugs
4. Work for a living. Learn to live on your own dime instead of others.
5. God and prayers back in schools and in personal life. Every child should know the 10 Commandments by 2nd grade.

No need for gun control because there will substantially less criminal activity.
