Tears for the Border Children
New York Times ^ | July 16, 2014 | By Charles M. Blow

Posted on 07/16/2014 9:39:27 PM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

The fight over how to process and care for masses of children from Central America who have crossed into this country is quickly becoming a spectacle of the obscene.

While the government tries to abide by the law as written and handle the children with as much care as any child would deserve, under any circumstances, the public continues to see images of angry adults intent on confronting buses full of minors.

All this has raised the tenor of xenophobic hysteria in this country and is likely to poison the well of comprehensive immigration reform.

At this point, the entire issue has taken on partisan dimensions. Many of the president’s core supporters — blacks, liberal Democrats and young people — are more likely to support following the current policy. On the other hand, constituencies more likely to oppose the president — men, whites, older people and Republicans, particularly those who are supporters of the Tea Party — favor speeding up the process.

This is not the best face of a great nation. This is the underside of a great stone, which when lifted sends creepy things slithering in all directions. We are better than this. We are more compassionate than this. We are more honorable than this.

This is not the time to give in to our lesser angels, but the time to rise with our better ones.

Not sure what Blow's point is other than bash anyone who critiques the president, but posting because it's the NY Slimes.

WTF is going on with these people.

When you find a kid separated from his parents, you send him back home home to his parents, not to some camp or school thousands of miles away in a different state wher he can stay without his parents.

the cost of this mess should be taken out of the various state/federal welfare budgets. Not one dime should come from spending increases of any kind.

That's what the libs said about Elian Gonzalez. And he had relatives in the U.S. willing to take him in. Of course, Cuba being the paradise that it is, the situations are hardly the same.

One man’s “boarder children” is another man’s freeloading illegal alien invader.

How about tears for the americans who will victims of crime by illegals>

Tears for the taxpayers who will have to pay the welfare bills for illegals

Tears for the property owners who will have to pay to school illegal alien children

Tears for those whose health care costs will go up because of illegals getting free health care

Tears for those who will catch diseases brought over the border.

And tears for america turning into a third world country just so democrats can get more power to abuse.

Sorry, no more tears left. I’m all dried up.

The kids would be home with their parents like the we’re 2-3 months ago if Obama had not started this. He doesn’t care about the kids here or there, this is an attempt to increase the size of the democrat party, to control the nations purse.
If he cared a hoot about kids he would be doing something about Chicago or other cities where kids are dragged into drug gangs. He does nothing about that, he says nothing about that.
The Emperor is a phony, like the writer of the column.

You're right. So their solution will be to bring the parents here.

A lot of the parents are already here illegally and these kids are being reunited with them. That blows the whole “running away from gang wars and unrest in Central America” argument out of the water. They are coming here because they think they will be treated like dreamers and their parents will be allowed to stay under the administration policy of not deporting families.

Something like 80% of the “children” are young men over the age of 14 and a high percentage are gang members. There are also many “children” over the age of 18 pretending to be younger.

No idea. I just know the deputy AG who signed off on sending him in moved up to the big job in this administration.

Hey Chucky Blow, where are your tears for Americans?

No one is “stirring up” Americans, Americans are righteously outraged by the refusal of the government to enforce the law.

Chucky, where are your tears for immigrants who followed the law but were made fools of by the illegal aliens you swoon over?

Chucky: you are an effete POS. Period. You have no idea what it is to be an American.

As comes out of the president’s pen and phone after being duly tortured!

I’m purty sure the law doesn’t dictate “Scatter them all over the country under the flimsiest pretexts.”

All this has raised the tenor of xenophobic hysteria in this country

actually, it's only raised the tenor of the racemonger hysteria in this country - which is expected as much as rain in Spring. Except it's backfiring. Republicans and Tea Party-ites have stuck to the reality of facts, moral and financial, and they remember when the British forced the colonists to board troops in their homes. So Mr. Blow can go pound Mr. sand with his racemongering self.
