Passenger Of Crashed Plane Posted Photo Before Take-Off
The Moscow Times ^ | Jul. 17 2014

A passenger on the Malaysian Airlines flight that crashed in eastern Ukraine appears to have posted an ominous message before the plane took off from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

The man, identifying himself on Facebook only as "Cor Pan", posted a photo showing the aircraft parked at its gate. Alluding to missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, whose fate has been unclear for months, he added a comment to the picture: "In case it disappears, this is what it looks like."

While it is theoretically possible to manipulate both the time and location shown alongside a photo, the reactions underneath the photo speak for its authenticity.

Comments posted as a reaction to the picture initially included wishes for a relaxing holiday but soon took on a more sinister turn.

Facebook friends of the man, who is presumably Dutch posted comments of disbelief, mourning, offer their condolences and confirm that he was among those killed.

By Thursday night, the Facebook post had been shared almost 4000 times.

Just a guy trying a little humor who ended up with gallows humor.

He was going onto a malaysian plane. A maylasian plane made the news recently because it disappeared. I would have made such a crack were I about to get on a Malaysian plane.

Another downed plane or two and the Malaysian Airlines won’t have any commercial planes left.

They won't need any: they won't have any passengers left, either.

Did the rebels use FB to find out about this plane coming their way?

The rebels were quite clueless. They thought they were shooting down another Ukrainian Air Force plane delivering supplies to troops in the area. The first question the rebel commander asked was, did they have the pilots? (after they bagged that AN-26 on Monday, the crew bailed out and were captured). Forty minutes later, he was informed the fields were strewn with dead bodies bearing foreign passports. At that point, he deleted his tweet boasting of another victory.

It appears the rebels have neither air traffic control radar nor fighter jets. ATC would have indicated MH17 as a commercial flight. Scrambling a fighter jet would have settled any question over whether the airplane was civilian or not. But the rebels do have advanced Soviet anti-aircraft weaponry, which can lock on a target and destroy it with the push of a button.
