While most of the world is trying to diminish child labor, Bolivia has become the first nation to legalize it from age 10. Congress approved the legislation early this month, and Vice President Alvaro Garcia signed it into law Thursday in the absence of President Evo Morales, who was traveling.

The bill's sponsors say lowering the minimum work age from 14 simply acknowledges a reality: Many poor families in Bolivia have no other choice than for their kids to work. The bill offers working children safeguards, they say.

Ah, the fruits of “progressivism” (in this case the Evo Morales regime): Child labor.

It must be a “progressive” form of child labor.

Evo Morales, that great leader whose Marxist philosophy has assured his country’s economic status remains entrenched in poverty.

While there needs to be substantial health and safety limits, it’s good for children to work.

Also, just as the so-called children swarming our borders, the Latin American cultures are reaching puberty now at 10.5 years.

Here in Washington state, years ago my friends and I started working the fruit harvest at age 11. It is so hard for kids to even earn a penny even more, with harvest work precluded and lemonade stands requiring licenses. No more paper boys riding their bikes.

It was better when young folks could have a regular activity to earn some spending money. Kids on farms used to start working at maybe five gathering the eggs and such.

You’re right. I started driving tractor for $.25 an hour when I was seven, I picked tomatoes and apples in my early teens. I guess I should have been hanging out with a choom gang.
