Activist Admits She Doesn’t Want Abortions to be Rare: “We Want as Many Abortions as Needed”

Safe. Legal. Rare. Three simple words. On their own, powerless. Devoid of any meaning but their individual Merriam-Webster definitions. But string them together and they become something else entirely.

“Safe, legal and rare.” A phrase that has been used by abortion advocates since the 1990s. A phrase that admits there is something about abortion that demands its rarity. A phrase that, in its beginning, seeks to ominously remind us of the pre-Roe era, a time period during which abortion advocates claimed women died in droves from back-alley abortions. (The truth is much less macabre.)

stephherold

A phrase that today’s abortion advocates are tired of. Feminist, abortion advocate and writer for The Guardian Jessica Valenti feels strongly enough about it that she wrote an op-ed criticizing Hillary Clinton for not abandoning the tagline.

I support abortion rights. Being pro-choice means a lot of different things to me – among them, that abortion should be safe, legal, accessible, subsidized [i.e., paid for by everyone else but the woman getting the abortion] and provided with empathy and non-judgment…’safe, legal and rare’ is not a framework that supports women’s health needs: it stigmatizes and endangers it.

She isn’t alone in her concern. Dr Tracy Weitz, Director of Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH) program at the University of California, San Francisco, wrote in a 2010 research article that the tagline increases the “stigma” associated with abortion (a stigma that couldn’t possibly exist because a baby dies in every abortion, right?). I don’t think your parenthetical question is clearly ironic and it comes at the end of a long sentence — I would simply state what you want to say. She continues, “‘rare’ suggests that abortion is happening more than it should, and that there are some conditions for which abortions should and should not occur. It separates good abortions from bad abortions.”

Steph Herold, deputy director of the Sea Change Program, says the tagline “implies that abortion is somehow different than other parts of healthcare. We don’t say that any other medical procedure should be rare…We want there to be as many abortions as there needs to be.”

Never once mentioning the other entity involved in every abortion (hint: he or she is alive, genetically unique and their (temporary) name starts with “b” and ends with “aby”), Valenti uses the term “pregnancy,” often preceded by the word “unwanted” repeatedly, as one would say about “unwanted wisdom tooth” or “unwanted belly fat.”

Valenti says “abortion is often just one part of a normal woman’s larger reproductive life,” and on that point we somewhat agree. For the thousands of preborn women who lose their lives every week to abortion, whether targeted by their parents for being “inconvenient” or even for the “issue” of having ovaries instead of testes, abortion is the end of their own chance to make “reproductive health choices” because it is the end of their lives.

For them, for all the women who are like my 11-week old preborn baby, I can agree with Valenti on one more thing: Abortion should not be rare…

It should be nonexistent.

Abortion Far Deadlier Than Childbirth

afterabortion.org/2000/abortion-four-times-deadlier-than-childbirth/

Mothers who choose abortion are much more prone to suffering death from various causes (suicide, accident, homicide, death due to medical causes) than Mothers who give birth, Mothers who suffer miscarriage, or Women who have not had a pregnancy.

There is a heightened death rate after abortion for all causes together: Compared to women who carry to term, women who abort are 3.5 times more likely to die within a year.

Maternal Mortality in Finland – Women of reproductive age (15-49) who died between 1987 and 1994 – 9,192 women studied. Source: STAKES, the statistical analysis unit of Finland’s National Research and Development Center for Welfare and Health. “No Pregnancy” (second row) set as baseline-1.0, against which are measured rates for Birth, Miscarriage and Abortion.

The Finnish post-abortion death statistics are considered particularly reliable because there is little opposition to abortion in Finland: it is a “settled issue”, there is little domestic controversy, Finland is one of the most prosperous countries in the world. “The quality of service in Finnish health care is considered to be good; according to a survey published by the European Commission in 2000, Finland has the highest number of people satisfied with their hospital care system in the EU: 88% of Finnish respondents were satisfied compared with the EU average of 41.3%.”

What? Not to call her a dirty stinkin' whorin' slut with glasses?

You are correct. A Christian should be more concerned about her thoroughly and completely lost soul and her spending Eternity with the carcass of each and every child she helps prevent from being born.

The 1973 Roe scotus ruling exposes the lie this creature is still trying to float. In 1972 it was perfectly legal to have a pregnancy termination if medically necessary/needed. The Roe ruling was aimed at dramatically increasing abortion in America and especially in black and poor populations. The program of the democrips to make abortion common has resulted in their latest dead soul champion, L4B having to import an invasion of Hispanics to replace the votes lost to the slaughter.

I can’t see why the baby killer would ever have a need for an abortion?

Those aren’t very good odds.

Any society which does not make the murder of the unborn a capital crime is an unjust society. Anyone who argues against Christian paternalism is de-facto supporting abortion.

Love it when the trite expression “rare” is used.

They think it shows them as having a reasonable, fair-minded, middle-of-the-fence, self-control, and not-nearly-as unreasonable-as-those-REAL-abortion-lovers perspective.

I usually destroy their self-important, unthinking position with 2 simple words: “why rare?”

The Coathanger Buzzword

"Prior to Roe, pro-choicers were fond of saying that nearly a million women every year obtained illegal abortions performed with rusty coat hangers in back-alleys that resulted in thousands of fatalities. Given the gravity of the issue at hand, it would go beyond the duty of kindness to call such claims an exaggeration, because several well-attested facts establish that the pro-choice movement was simply lying."

The "coat hanger" argument is one of the most emotionally compelling appeals of abortion activists. It is also misleading and would seem to have little substance.

- The Life Information Website, New Zealand, "The Coat Hanger Argument"

Do you want to return to the days of back alley abortion?

The idea of widespread and dangerous "back alley" abortions prior to the nationwide legalization of abortion in 1973 is not supported by the facts. The medical director of Planned Parenthood wrote in 1960:

Ninety percent of illegal abortions are being done by physicians. Call them what you will, abortionists or anything else, they are still physicians, trained as such;... They must do a pretty good job if the death rate is as low as it is...Abortion, whether therapeutic or illegal, is in the main no longer dangerous because it is being done well by physicians [1].

It is impossible to know exactly how many illegal abortions were performed prior to 1973 for the simple reason that they were not reported. However, records were kept for the number of women who died from illegal abortions. When a woman was seriously injured during an abortion, she went to another doctor for care. If she died, the physician would not deliberately falsify her death certificate—an act punishable as a felony—to protect the abortionist. Thus, it stands to reason that prior to the nationwide legalization of abortion, deaths from illegal abortions were reported accurately.

Illegal Abortion Deaths Chart

The graph at right [2] was used on the floor of the U. S. Senate during hearings on abortion in 1981. Compiled from statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics, it was not challenged by abortion supporters.

As you can see, after Penicillin became available to control infections, the number of deaths from abortion stabilized in the 1950s to about 250 per year. By 1966, when abortion was still illegal in all 50 states, the number of deaths had gradually dropped to half that number. And, in 1972, the year before the Supreme Court legalized abortion, only 39 women died—fewer than one per state.

The bottom line is that prior to the legalization of abortion, either there were not many illegal abortions, or illegal abortions were relatively safe.

Of course the Democrat Party support this point of view since it removed the “safe, legal and rare” formulation from the party platform.
