U.S. intelligence agencies said a Malaysian airliner flying over Ukraine was shot down by a surface-to-air-missile of unknown origin Thursday. Vice President Joe Biden said it was “blown out of the sky.” The Boeing jetliner had 295 people on board and was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Ukraine’s foreign ministry blamed pro-Russian rebels who allegedly used the Russian-made Buk missile system.
The Daily Beast's Josh Rogin reports top Democrats in Congress called the incident a “terrorist attack” and “act of war,” adding that Putin may be to blame.
Anna Nemstova reports that the plane’s black box has been sent to Moscow “for investigation.” If rebels were operating a Buk missile system and shot down the plane, they likely couldn't see what they were shooting at, Chris Albritton and Dave Majumdar report. Clive Irving writes commercial aircraft were avoiding Crimea but apparently not eastern Ukraine, assuming that cruising altitude would keep planes safe.

The country to watch is Germany. Merkel has an awful lot of business in the eastern part of her country that is tied to Russia. And most people forget that she is from the old East Germany, and that is where Putin was stationed with the KGB.
She’s pissed about the NSA taps; it is a much bigger issue over there than in the US. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Merkel use this incident (and the west’s response to it) to begin to put a little distance between the US and Germany in matters related to Russia.
Maybe the Democrats can take some of the people they’ve been spending that Peace Dividend on and have them attack Russia.

The shoot down was the result of excessive nationalistic exuberance and irrational bravado.
Act of War???? There are hostilities in Eastern Ukraine. Russian separatists/Russian nationals are in a civil war with the “take over” Ukrainian government. MOST Ukrainians DO NOT want to be a part of Russia or under their suppression. So there’s a war. More than likely an untrained separatist fired a missile when he shouldn’t have. The Dems are playing politics with this incident as usual. “There will be hell to pay” is no more of a threat than Obama’s red lines.

Act of terrorism on a civilian aircraft. NATO silent so far. Black boxes reportedly shuttled off to Moscow. No one can get to the crash site to recover those on it? First reports indicated 23 Americans were on board. Now the numbers are coming out and there’s none listed, except saying that ‘some others’ are as yet unidentified. Schipol Airport security in Amsterdam was much better than ours when I went through there in the 90’s. I would think they knew who and exactly where from all the passengers on that plane were from. Praying for the souls lost in this attack.
So far, I’ve not seen much to reassure if anything will be done and/or by whom. Things are not in any way close to whatever description of normal I can come up with in my lifetime.
The air space path is frequently taken by Russian jets, including Putin’s.
The Ukrainian groups that are fighting the Russian backed “separatists” probably shot it down thinking it was a Russian plane, and downed a Malaysian jet instead.
