Highway to the danger zone? Non-pilot given command of Air Force in Pacific
Washington Times ^ | 07/17/2014 | Rowan Scarborough

The White House has picked the first female general to head the Air Force in the Pacific, which will make her the first non-pilot to command air power in such a large theater of operation.

The Pentagon announced this week that Air ForceLt. Gen. Lori J. Robinson has been nominated for promotion to four-star general and as commander of Pacific Air Forces, the Air Force component of U.S. Pacific Command. It is a major combatant command whose air, ground and naval forces have broad responsibility for security in the Asia-Pacific region. Her nomination was sent to the Senate for confirmation.

As a CPA I resent that comment. I have hands on experience running business. Not all CPA’s are so cost conscious as to destroy what works. The objective is to fix what is broken.

Any business is only as good as the employees and you reward productivity by empowering the employees. Keep out of the way of production and eliminate bureaucracy. You monitor what is going on but minimize your presence and interference.

I always told my employees u will fire you quicker for not making a decision than making one. When you do not make one in essence you did and most times the wrong one.

You can teach employees how to make the decisions you want if you will take the time. Lastly do not tell me how to do the accounting and I will nor tell you how to rebuild the engine in my car. I will listen to your reccomendations and rey ans have the job done right the first time because that is always the cheapest way to do any job.

Imagine you’re the base commander somewhere when this twofer (pardon me, threefer, she’s not a pilot) & her retinue show up demanding VIP treatment.

Oh, and they’ll be conducting an EO investigation.

Will some die because of this?

"I certainly hope so!"

This is like putting a coach who never played football but instead ran the pop stand in charge of training and leading a football team.

Sure, she has some skills. But will they be the right ones with the proper perspectives when the SHTF and the life and death decisions of real combat are critical? I seriously doubt it.

Actual flying experience is important but actually running operational flying operations at all levels is just more important - and that is almost never done by somebody who is not a trained and experienced aircrew member. She apparently has none of those skills.

However, she is a female, so I suppose in today's military that more than makes up for her stark deficiencies in critical combat areas. It would be even better is she is a lesbian or transgendered person, right?

There are good reasons pilots (and occasionally very talented navigators) are generally chosen to the top command positions in the Air Force, and it is not just because of their dashing good looks!

Whaddayaexpect? Got a community organizer for a “president” why not a non-pilot running an Air Force. Is she black and gay too, it wouldn’t surprise me...those are the new qualifications for leadership in the USA. Experience, leadership and competence are no longer elements of the selection/appointment process.

I don't know why everybody is getting so upset. Most pictures of Ike when he was Operation Overlord commander show him with just a few service ribbons. These lady wears like 25 ribbons. So I conclude she is, if anything, over-qualified.

Reminds me of this old song from Gilbert and Sullivan.

Sir Joseph.
When I was a lad I served a term
As office boy to an Attorney’s firm.
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor,
And I polished up the handle of the big front door.

Chorus.
He polished up the handle of the big front door.

Sir Joseph.
I polished up that handle so carefullee
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Chorus.
He polished up that handle so carefullee,
That now he is the ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Sir Joseph.
As office boy I made such a mark
That they gave me the post of a junior clerk.
I served the writs with a smile so bland,
And I copied all the letters in a big round hand.
Chorus.
He copied all the letters in a big round hand.

Sir Joseph.
I copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Chorus.
He copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Sir Joseph.
In serving writs I made such a name
That an articled clerk I soon became;
I wore clean collars and a brand-new suit
For the pass examination at the Institute.

Chorus.
For the pass examination at the Institute.

Sir Joseph.
That pass examination did so well for me,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Chorus.
That pass examination did so well for he,
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Sir Joseph.
Of legal knowledge I acquired such a grip
That they took me into the partnership.
And that junior partnership, I ween,
Was the only ship that I ever had seen.

Chorus.
Was the only ship that he ever had seen.

Sir Joseph.
But that kind of ship so suited me,
That now I am the ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Chorus.
But that kind of ship so suited he,
That now he is the ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Sir Joseph.
I grew so rich that I was sent
By a pocket borough into Parliament.
I always voted at my party’s call,
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all.

Chorus.
He never thought of thinking for himself at all.

Sir Joseph.
I thought so little, they rewarded me
By making me the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Chorus.
He thought so little, they rewarded he
By making him the Ruler of the Queen’s Navee!

Sir Joseph.
Now landsmen all, whoever you may be,
If you want to rise to the top of the tree,
If your soul isn’t fettered to an office stool,
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.

Chorus.
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.

Sir Joseph.
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea,
And you all may be rulers of the Queen’s Navee!

For the record, Robinson is married to retired USAF Major General David A. Robinson. Robinson’s step daughter, United States Air Force Reserve (USAFR) Second Lieutenant Taryn Ashley (b.February 1, 1983) was critically injured, and her civilian flight instructor was killed, when their plane impacted terrain on September 21, 2005. Taryn later succumbed to her injuries and died on January 10, 2006. Lt. Robinson was enrolled in a government undergraduate pilot training (UPT) introductory flight program, and this was her second flight.

If the woman was former “back seater,” some type of aircrew, this would be fine (apples to me. I served OK at Naval Air Facility, Detroit during the Gulf War).

Because as everyone knows there has never once in all of recorded history been a case where a woman was placed in a position due to her competence and qualifications.

The difference is that this is really happening and it’s not good. The purge is a myth started by idiots and perpetuated by ignorant dolts with internet connections.

Probably. Everyone knows that women can't get ahead on talent, right? They have to have diversity or something.

My comment was more ribbon-related than gender-related.

As far as a woman's competence goes, one of the most interesting biographies I ever read was that of Adm Grace Hopper.

How many of those ribbons are gedunk ribbons? Holly Graf (the female Captain Bligh) had a lot of those.

And my comment was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek, and after witnessing dozens of these kinds of threads.
