“I am a single mother of one beautiful 5-year-old girl,” she wrote. “I was married and divorced by the age of 16 ...”
She explained how she was working full time while also attending the university. She wanted a business and human resources degree.
“I do everything in my power to raise my daughter to be better than the person I used to be,” she wrote.
But her rent was more than $800 and her child-care expenses were sometimes more than that — on top of taxes and healthcare coverage withheld from her pay.
After applying for food stamps, she found that she earned too much to qualify.

Married and divorced by 16? What state allows marriage at 14 or 15, and doesn’t require child support?
She has no family to babysit while she works or attends class? I could get myself into some real trouble and be labeled a racist by asking one simple question: why don’t these woman support each other’s efforts to better themselves by watching each other’s children whenever they’re needed? Wouldn’t life in this community change overnight if black women started behaving like a real supportive community?
At 21 she is making $15.00 an hour?

At 21 my draft number came up.
I went to basic training school (Enlisted in the USAF)
I made about $320 a month with a married allowance. (not much)
I was stationed in England and gasoline cost US $5.00 plus dollars in 1972. At least I was not getting shot at.
